Day 9

Apr 01, 2008

I am finally starting to feel like a human being again!

I weighed myself today. I have lost 18.8 lbs. in nine days! :)
Now...The pre-surgery wt. I am using was from the surgeon's office and I was wearing clothes and shoes...So...I actually lost a couple less lbs. than 18.8. However, I like to weigh myself right in the morning with the same clothing on each time so its consistent. So, we will start with this number.

My actually appointment with my surgeon isn't until April 15th! They told me not to weigh myself until I met with her, but my appt. keeps getting pushed further and further back, so I decided not to keep waiting :).

This can be a very difficult journey.
Here is my timeline from feeling like a zombie to a human:

Day 0 or Day 1 - Day of surgery. Pain control is of most importance

Day 2-3 - SEVERE gas pain...Couldn't sit up or move or anything. Couldn't even breathe at times from all the pressure moving to my chest. Probably my WORST day.

Day 3- Discharged! Gas pain starting to leave. Feeling positive about that.

Day 4-5- At home. Gas pain gone. Incisional pain more profound.

Day 5- Trip to E.R. from dehydration.

Day 6- Depressed. I want a normal life back again. I'm tired of the hospital and being in pain.

Day 7- Starting to feel better! Most of pain is gone. Feels like a stomach ache and moderate soreness. Having a really hard time eating and drinking, however. I want to vomit when I see food. And I get nauseous every time I eat and drink. I am struggling to get 64 oz. of fluid in. My pouch is so small. I went to bed this nite very upset. I ate an egg---big mistake. I waited 45 minutes to start drinking. I had to stay up for an hour and half just to get 10 oz. of fluid in. I kept wanting to vomit I felt so nauseous. I still had 10 oz. more of water to go after an hour and a half...but was so exhausted and sick I decided to just go to sleep.

Day 8- First day to get all my fluids in! I have been taking slightly bigger sips and they seem to be going down okay and a little more quickly :).!

One week post-op

Mar 31, 2008

Its been one week! I am really glad the surgery is behind me!

My surgeon said the surgery went perfect. However, I have been having a really difficult time adjusting to everything. I may have a low pain tolerance or life adjustment tolerance...Not really sure.

The majority of all the pain is gone, which is a great thing.

Right now...I'm really struggling with fluid/food intake. I get so full very easily...I feel that it is really hard to get 64oz. of fluids in. I fell nauseated quite frequently...Everytime I think of food a wave of nausea passes through me. And many times when I drink liquids (even after waiting 30 minutes after eating) I get relatively nauseated. I feel pretty weak as well. Hopefully it will get easier in the upcoming weeks.

I have noticed my iron supplement really helps with my weakness. I also recently ordered vitamins from Vita4Life. I only have to take two vitamins daily! No more nasty liquids!

...I became very dehydrated on Friday...I also had a fever above 101. In my education notebook they told me to call my surgeon if that happened. I had to go to the E.R. and I was admitted again until Sunday :(. I really hope the whole surgery experience is behind me now. I want to move on with my life.

I know this is a pretty negative post, but I'm just keeping it real. It seems this surgery has been very easy for some people and that's great. But, for me...It has been very difficult and I just wanted to let people be aware of it.

I don't regret it by any means. I would have never lost weight if I was not about to have this surgery. I think once I start to feel better with foods/fluids I will have a more positive outlook on it all.

Tomorrow is the big day! :)

Meeting The Surgeon

Mar 13, 2008

I really think I will like my surgeon. She thinks I will do well, esp. since I have no other health issues! I really hope everything turns out ok. I'm nervous, but definitely more excited than anything!

At the end of the visit she gave me a big hug which was really nice. She made me feel comfortable and that I am in good hands with her. :) Her assistant was great as well. I felt a lot more confident after that appointment.

I really have not had a good experience with her office staff at all. They have been rude and they STILL had me scheduled for the Lap Band, even though we changed to Gastric Bypass over a month ago. That was just one of the many things, but it was the final straw for me yesterday.

Anyway, hope everything goes smoothly from here on out! :)

Pre-op Done!

Mar 06, 2008

I had pre-op yesterday. I'm glad I'm almost done with all the stuff before my surgery. Now I just need to meet with my surgeon, Rita Anderson, (Next Thurs.) and I am finished with all of the appointments before I have surgery!

I am self pay. I have two insurances (BCBS of Alabama and UHC. They both denied me :( ). My parents agreed to pay 2/3 of it (Love them for it) and I will pay a 1/3 once I graduate from school and start working.

Pre-op yesterday went well. I have some bruising from my ABG draw and other blood draws, but besides that, everything went well. Well...They also said I had a small vascular lesion on my liver. Its not uncommon and the the lady that gave the ultrasound said it was nothing to worry about. Also, the Barium drink was pretty nasty. It was worse afterward. I felt like someone pumped me up with air and felt extremely bloated the rest of the day.

I went to an education class after my testing that had tons of helpful information. I feel like a lot of people lack education when it comes to how to care for themselves after Bariatric surgery. I'm glad the hospital I am going to provides so much information. It makes me feel comfortable and that I will be successful in caring for myself.

Talk soon
-Abby- :)
