Tomorrow is the Big Day

Apr 13, 2009

Thanks for your words of encouragement Jeannette.  I have done my best to follow the pre-surgery diet plan and now the time is almost here.  It is now 9:37 pm the night before surgery.  I have to be at the hospital at 9:45 am.  Surgery is scheduled for 10:50 a.m.  My husband will call when it is done.

The Day Approaches

Apr 02, 2009

I find it very difficult to believe, but my insurance approved my surgery within a day or two after it was submitted.  I am scheduled to have gastric bypass on April 14, 2009.  My doctor requires that I follow the Atkins diet plan for 2 weeks before the surgery.  I was really worried about this.  It has not been that difficult and I am truly amazed that I no longer feel bloated.  I don't know if I have actually lost any weight but I haven't taken my diabetes medication and my sugars have been well under control (from 98 to 132).  I have called my primary care physician and told her about this but haven't heard back from her yet.  I went to Greenville, NC for my preop blood work, etc. this morning and am getting excited.  Several people have told me that the surgery is very painful.  One person told me she felt like she had been hit by a mack truck.  I am not letting that get in the way of my success.  My new philosophy toward any pain I have is that "This too shall pass".

A New Beginning

Mar 21, 2009

I started on this journey over 5 years ago.  I started the tests and then my neice had the surgery and died 3 days afterward.  My mother hounded me about not having it so I just gave up.  Then on a visit to my doctor on 8/12/08, the subject came up again and I decided to give it one more try.  As I am sure all of you know, it is not a short process and the practice that I chose is one of the first to do this surgery in my area.  I have only told my closest friends and not my mother.  I have almost slipped a couple of times but did not let it slip.  I have had all of the tests and have been approved by my insurance company.  Now I am just waiting for the surgery to be scheduled.  My current weight is 290 pounds and I am 5'6" tall.  I have a lot of belly.  I never wear dresses or skirts because my belly holds the skirt out so that the hem is several inches away from my legs.  I look like I have on a tent.  I am so looking forward to the benefits from this surgery, though I understand this is definitely not the "easy" way some people call it.  The discomfort from the surgery will pass and I hope to be a healthier Senior Citizen.
