David Kam

"My first impression of Dr. Kam was very good. I was afraid and timid when I first made the appointment and then I was a nervous wreck when I actually went. He made me feel at ease immediately knowing how hard it was to take the first steps. I also feel like the first meeting is informational and you are not necessarily going to "for sure" do anything. He was fantastic at imparting important information without making you feel like it was some sort of sales pitch, which I think a lot of people expect sometimes. I asked him a million questions concerning his qualifications and his personal life. (he is an amazingly qualified, successful surgeon who worked in an emergency trauma center) He made me feel like my health was the most important thing at that moment. Also very thoroughly taking my medical info and telling me things that directly pertained to my situation, and let me know that every person is different. He made me feel like an individual and not just lumped in with everyone with morbid obesity. Frankly, he made me feel like no other doctor has made me feel since I was a kid. Like I was going in a positive direction, and that these problems are more common than most people think. He did not look down his nose at me or tell me to do things that seemed unrealistic. On the contrary, his attitude made me feel like I could really do this. That this was something that would work if I worked it. The day of the surgery, not only did he make me me comfortable, but he made my entire family feel confident in his abilities as a surgeon and even made them feel confident that I would do extremely well with this. My mom and dad were highly impressed with his bedside manner which is pretty important since my parents are extremely picky and I was really out of it (surgery drugs). After I had the surgery and have seen him in the office 4 or 5 times now he is complimentary and inspiring which I believe is just inherently part of his personality. He makes a lot of positive statements on how he thinks I'm handling the recovery, excercise and food plan. And it really helps to have all the encouragement you can get from anyone, but especially your doctor I think. Now, one thing that might bother some people is that he is extremely fast. There is a lot of information to go through and he gets through it as quickly as possible and then you can mull things over. But I can tell you, if there is anything I didn't understand or if I needed more information after my appointment he was more than happy to help me on the phone. Also, a patient counselor could help me. I really wanted to wait and see how I was doing for a few months before I wrote about him. It's been 5 months and I have lost about 73lbs. I feel good with not too many problems at all. I can truly say that I, as an individual, feel truly cared for overall by my surgeon and the facility."
