I've been heavy my entire adult life and then most of my childhood years too... I have seen firsthand the benefits that WLS has. My ex husband had WLS while we were married and went from 300+lbs to approx 160lbs.
Although I witnessed this awesome weight loss and health/quality of life improving transformation, I just didn't feel it was for me. It has taken me almost 4yrs to reach my decision and I feel that I'm doing it for all the right reasons and at the right time in my life too. I am ready for the life changing committments this will require of me. Ready to improve my life and make a turn around for the better when it comes to my health.
I went to the doctor for a checkup and decided that now was the time to get things in motion. I asked for my referral. Within two weeks I had my appointment for a consult scheduled. I go in March 7th 2007. I haven't had much contact with the office or the doctor but the woman I spoke with that scheduled my appointment was awesome. She was friendly, informative and never seemed rushed to get off the phone. I was told that after my appointment they would be able to submit a request for approval to my insurance company so long as I had a psych eval done. I could wait till after my consult or schedule one prior to. Of course I opted to go prior to.... let's keep the ball moving!! My appointment is February 27th.
I am SO excited about the prospects that await and so far things have gone well with getting a referral. I am keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well at both appointments and that my insurance authorizes the surgery.
