Hi, my name is Cathy and I am a health care social worker at a hospital in South Dakota. I have been battling with my weight unsuccessfully since I was about 8 years old. Finally, about a year ago, just before my 40th birthday, I realized that without some sort of tool to assist me, I would probably die an early death. I take medications for my blood pressure and cholesterol, and I have a strong family history of heart disease on both sides of my family. I started the process to get the gastric sleeve approved by my insurance back in February 2011. At that time, my insurance, Federal Blue Cross and Blue Shield, felt the procedure was experimental, and so they were not covering it. After all of the pre-operative requirements for the insurance, I had decided to go with the Lap-Band, and at the very last appointment before the paperwork was sent in, I learned that the sleeve is now being approved. I was truly delighted (and scared to death). After all, I know how to be the jovial fat girl. This will be all new. My surgery is scheduled for next Thursday, August 4th.
