I had Roux en Y surgery in 2002. I lost 80# through surgery and significant lifestyle changes. In the past 4 years I have had to really work to not gain weight, and losing weight was impossible. I spoke with my original surgeon 4 years ago about my concerns. The upper GI showed a staple line "leak" but he said it was no big deal. I did not know better and did not seek a 2nd opinion. So after suspicion that my anastomasis had stretched and food was literally flying through my stomach, making me hungry an hour or two after eating, I decided to find a new surgeon and discuss revision. I did not feel my original surgeon listened very well or was good with the post surgery care. So after a lot of good discussion, aided by a surgeon with patience and having become a nurse who knows what to question and discuss, I had revision surgery March 13, 2015. The issue was a gastro-gastric fistula (opening from the small stomach to the remnant stomach) as my RNY did not involve excising the unused stomach. It's now fixed, was covered by insurance b/c this was a medical issue, but the side effect will be weight loss.
