Hi! My name is Dawn. I've been pretty obese all my life. As a child, I was hyper aware of it. As an adult, I grew accustomed to it. I had considered WLS years ago when my mother went through it, and I had started the process, but then she started having complications with her Roux-en-Y, so I didn't pursue it any further. Fast forward almost twenty years, many diets, many diet pills, many exercise programs, and many frustrations later, I'm still obese, morbidly so. I have started to have some health issues and my doctor has suggested that I pursue this once again. This time, I am pursuing the VSG. I am proud to say that I have put some healthy habits in my life, it's just not enough. I really need to do this. I'm determined and actually a bit excited to use this tool to be healthy and be around for my grandchildren, and my husband. I am trying to dream what it would be like to be a healthy and normal weight. I have never been. I like to think that I am writing my own Cinderella story and happily-ever-after, and falling in love with myself.

My Background: My highest weight was 290. My current weight is usually 271. I married the first man I ever dated, and we've been together now for 26 years( married for 24). I have four children, a daughter 24, and three sons, 22, 20, and 18. I also have two beautiful granddaughters, 5 and 2, who I just can't get enough of.  I work at a Steel Mill.

I started this journey in August. August 1, I did my first 5K (walked it) but did all the obstacles as a promise to myself from my New Year's resolution. That day that I accomplished this, I told myself that I am going to do everything in my power to get healthy for me. I decided I would call Dr. Katz a call and start learning about WLS. About 2 weeks later, I met with him and his office staff, and decided for the VSG. It's now November 7, 2015, and I have done all the tests needed prior to surgery that my insurance requires and now just following the medically supervised diet program with my PPO. Later this month, that should be done and I submit everything to my insurance company. I am fortunate that my insurance does cover the surgery. So that's about it, that's where I am. I am looking forward to being a part of this group, for the support, for the ideas, for the inspiration and I hope that someday, I'll be able to inspire people and repay it forward to the next.
