Innocent Remarks or Maybe Not?

Oct 05, 2013

Hi there, hope you are all doing well. Would love to see some of you posting through here, am interested in your stories.

I have had a very stressful year due to many things already covered in my posts. Feeling very broken due to these things and am a little fragile.

Today I want to take a moment to talk about self image and innocent remarks. Or are they really innocent.

I am 54 years of age and have had a poor body image most of my life due to weight issues, non social accepted shape issues and ptosis of the breast tissues.

Almost two years ago I had my surgery and that changed my self image attitude a lot with the weight loss, however you know that the weight loss brings new body issues. Loss of breast tissue, excess skin, muffin top where you may have only had large stomach before.

Yesterday I was swimming and relaxing in my own back yard with family and friends and my breast shifted in my suit and stuck out over the top a bit. No nipple exposure or anything and a loved and trusted young women remarked innocently, ( I have to believe that) that this wouldn't happen if I wore a suit that fit. This set me back confidence wise for several hours and is still preying on me at this moment. I spent most of the night awake and crying over this remark. I am still hurt by it, but keep telling myself that I am far better off with this body than with the one I had before that required plus size clothing and five insulin injections per day. This young women is also larger and I have been a staunch supporter of her and have always tried to help her with confidence in being a healthy plus size.

It would be nice if people would think before they speak, or walk a mile in someone elses shoes.

I spent my teenage school years changing in a washroom stall so that no one could see that my large breasts were not perky and upright, and yesterday I felt that way again. I cannot afford the plastic surgery to fix the muffing top, excess abdominal skin and the breast lift.. So will have to learn again to accept myself, the way I am and to let what others say roll off like water off a ducks back.

Have a wonderful day all. Hoping to read more about you and your success/failure/stalled stories.

Regards

Dear Debbi,

I am a journalist based in Toronto and have just begun a large project exploring the pros and cons of bariatric surgery. I am funded through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. I am very interested in interviewing Canadians who have had bariatric surgery or are considering having it. I don't want to bother anyone, but I would love to be in touch with people who are interested in sharing their stories. I do not need to use anyone's real name or identifying information, if that is an issue. So far, I have been commissioned to do pieces for Readers Digest and for CBC radio's The Current.

Is there any way you could share this information with members of your group? I can be contacted by email at [email protected].

Thank you!

Alison

Taking Time for Me

Jul 09, 2013

Joined a gym and am loving it. Got a free two week pass and joined before the pass was done. I work out on my schedule and do what is good for me. Doing some stamina/strength, full body toning, cardio and stress relief (yoga, tai chi) Great machines, great atmosphere, great staff. Anytime Fitness KW-Cambridge. Have my orientation with them this morning. Had body analysis done last week. With the gym and the pool I should be able to drop the weight I gained during the very stressful months that followed the death of my father and all that it entailed.

Sorry to be MIA

Apr 07, 2013

HI there, welcome to new members. Would love to hear about your journey. This group was started to help out and reach out to those in the Guelph Area who have undergone this surgery or are still considering it.

Sorry I have been MIA for a while. Life gets in the way of blogging. With moving and the death of my father and the responsibilities of settling his estate I have little time or energy to post.

I am also at this time having great difficulty staying on the straight and narrow with my eating and exercise habits.

Traveling back and forth to handle his affairs is time consuming and more stressful than traveling to help him out during his illness and post surgeries.

We are also, trying desperately to put the house we purchased into some sort of order with painting and redecorating. My husband and I are very tired and it seems all we do is work and run. Hoping to get things down to a slow crawl soon so that I can get back on track and we can enjoy life.

Hope to hear about your lives and progress as well as your concerns about this journey we are on.

Have a great day.

Respect and Support Rant

Feb 21, 2013

There are those who think that people who opt for this type of surgery are taking the easy way out. We will always have to deal with this type of thinking. Just remember there is nothing easy about this choice and that you are doing it for your life.
I would like nothing better than to sit down and eat a full meal, or have a bag of chips, or go to the bar and have several drinks like I used to, but I want to LIVE and this is the trade off. For me it is all worth it. No Medications, normal blood sugars, diabetes in remission. For those that think this is easy, I would like them to try it for a month, and to put up with the body changes, such as adult acne, hair loss, extreme fatigue. What is easy about that.
So to those people who casually remark that weight loss surgery is the easy way out. The quick fix etc. Let's see you make some life altering decisions and stick with them. Quit smoking, or quit coffee, or start and maintain an exercise program.
None of these are easy things to do, or easy choices to make as there are negative side effects of your choices as well as positive ones.
Tolerance and support are all that we who chose to improve our quality of life by opting for weight loss surgery are asking for.
You would expect this type of behavior if you were trying to better yourself. So give it to us too!

Packing to Move (more)

Jan 27, 2013

Things are starting to look a little bare around here. Not in the rooms but in the cupboards and closets.

Get busy and sometimes forget to eat my snack, then have to make sure I don't over eat at the next meal

Our new place has a pool so am so excited for summer. I don't know if it is heated, but I am sure we can take care of that pretty quickly. Want to be at my goal weight and the best possible physical shape before having plastic surgery, so it's good that I love to swim. We are walking indoors and out, however outdoors we aren't out too long with the weather as cold as it has been. Looking forward to spring and all of the new experiences living in a new town will bring.

As for being skinny, more that one year post op. I still weigh over 175 and am never going to be stick thin. This is not in my genetic make up. If I get to my goal weight and have the excess redundant tissue/skin removed I should be about a size 28 waist in pants and at my height, bone structure and age I will be ecstatic with those results.

Let's hear about your goals, challenges and daily lives. Just a little post so we can get to know each other.

Have a wonderful Sunday.

Packing to Move

Jan 23, 2013

Wow, downsizing your home is a major chore and I am finding it very stressful. Some days having difficulty staying on the meal plan and eating the correct things. So much easier to grab a carb snack then to prepare a protein and a fruit.

Need to start watching with diligence as I have gained a few pounds from stress, lack of exercise and slipping into bad habits.

Went through this surgery to help with diabetes and don't want to slip up as I am over a year insulin free.

How are you doing? What are you doing to cope with stresses of everyday life?

We just found out about free indoor walking at the Y for inclement weather/winter.

Walked about 20 minutes there until my poor broken toes couldn't stand anymore.

Gaining new members but not hearing from you

Jan 15, 2013

Welcome to new members. It would be great to hear a little about you through this group.

If we communicate we may be able to help each other out with slip ups, fears, etc. and we can celebrate milestones together.

Today I am tired, very tired. We are looking for a new home and trying to sell ours so we are always on the run. Have put on a little weight due to stress and the impossibility of eating on a proper schedule while this is going on. Looking forward to having things settled so I can get back on track.

Packing and running for the move will undoubtedly take the weight back off, then to work on stabilization.

How are you doing?

Would like to Hear from Members

Jan 09, 2013

Hi there, it would be great if the members here would take a minute to introduce themselves and let us know where you are on your journey.

I am a little more than one year post op and am beyond the clinics goal weight but not at my own yet.

I have just seen the plastic surgeon about getting the excess skin removed and repairing some of the damage done partly due to weight loss. The procedures are not as expensive as I thought they would be, but still pretty costly. Will have to put it off for a while.

I am married so have a husband, and adult child and a cat living in the home with me.

That's it about me for now, let's hear from you :)

Christmas Dinner Over

Dec 26, 2012

Wow, so much great food for Christmas dinner. Tried a little of everything. Overdid it a little but not too bad. No pain or bloating. Even indulged in some wine, to celebrate the holiday. Great time had with family and extended family. Now relaxing and eating left overs for the day.
