One Year Surgiversary

Here I am, approaching my one year surgiversary and am down 146 lbs. I am so happy with the results of my RNY, and how it has helped me get to where I am today. As many people have stated, it isn't a cure, but a tool to assist in the weight loss. I have to continue to watch what I put in my mouth and constantly check what it is I am eating. My weight loss has come to a halt, and I haven't lost in quite some time. I am still approximately 11 lbs from my personal goal, and realize that I have to step up my exercise routine and check everything that I'm eating. I am surprised at how much food I can actually eat at this time. I was hoping that I wouldn't be able to eat as much as I can. The best thing about my RNY is the fact that I am off all medication that I was on prior to my surgery. My PCP and I met last week and we were discussing the issue of Type II Diabetes, and whether I am still considered diabetic or not. I have had no signs of diabetes since surgery. My sugar levels are perfect and I no longer use any medication related to that disease. Am I or am I not diabetic? He stated that this is an ongoing question for physicians. I also spoke to him about plastics, and a referral has been made, to discuss my options. I realize that it is too soon, but I am beginning to look around, get referrals and options for the future. Also, since my diabetes has disappeared, my eyesight has improved by 50% as well. My optometrist is elated with the fact that my eyes are now that much more improved since surgery. Another benefit to my weight loss surgery!!! Woo Hoo! This was the best thing I did for myself and my family. Now I really feel that I have a chance of seeing my children grow up, get married and God willing, have grandchildren to bounce on my lap. LIFE IS GOOD!

School's Back

We are almost finished our first week back to school this year, and what a shock the students and staff had when I went back.  Of course the staff had a chance to see me during the last week of August, when I was back preparing and setting up my class.  The students got their first look at me on Tuesday and many were absolutely surprised at the change.  Of course I've had to get a complete new wardrobe, which is nice and certainly much better fitting than my old outfits.  At this point, I have lost 129 lbs and have another 28 (yahoo) more lbs to go before I reach my goal.  If all continues to go as smoothly as it has, I should be there by or before Christmas.  If I'm not, oh well, I am certainly much better than I was 1 year ago.  I continue to praise the benefits of my RNY and have given many people information regarding the surgeon and surgery I had.  I would not have had such success without the help and assistance from everyone here on OH.  Thanks everyone.  Keep up the great work at spreading the benefits of Gastric Bypass Surgery.

Six Month Check-up

Jul 10, 2007

I'm getting ready for my 6 month check-up with Dr. O'Malley.  My appointment is set for August 6th. and I have lost 114 lbs.  since I started the process back in September '06.  I never would have imagined that 1 year ago when OHIP called approved my surgery that I would be down this much weight.  I remember painting the trim outside our house when the phone rang to tell me that I've been approved for WLS.  The wheels began turning quickly to get appointments arranged, and all the necessary things in place so that I could start a new life.
Prior to surgery, I was taking seven oral medications for my diabetes, as well as 46 units of insulin.  Today NOTHING!  That alone was worth the surgery.  I am getting comments almost on a daily basis about how good I look and how I've changed so dramatically.  I sometimes have difficulty noticing it myself, but it is so evident in the clothes and in how I feel.  Being able to walk without being out of breath, or feeling so hot and sweaty all the time.
WLS was the best thing I could have done for myself and my family. I know that WLS is a tool to help get the weight off, and that there is a lifetime ahead of me where I will have to continue to monitor the foods I eat and the choices I make.  I just know that having taken the weight off, certainly gives me a chance at a new life.  Only 40 more lbs and I will be at my goal.  I know I can do it now!

Yahoo!  I've finally made it to the 100 lb. lost mark.  I took the students on a trip to Quebec City last week.  I knew there would be a lot of walking and I would be getting in extra exercise.  Before I left, I was 98.5 lbs lost and knew I only had 1.5 lbs to reach this step on my way to my goal.  When I stepped on the scale this morning, I had lost a total of 102 lbs.  What a great feeling to have made this milestone.  I now have another 56 lbs to go before I reach my final goal.  I have a feeling that these may be a little harder to take off than the first 100, but we'll see!

3 Month Post-Op

Saturday May 5th. was my 3 month anniversary of my surgery.  I am feeling great, and have lost a total of 61 lbs. since then, and 86.5 lbs since I started my pre-op diet on November 1st., 2006.  I find that my clothes are so baggy.  I have had all of my pants taken in by a seamstress, but they are still too big.  I only have a couple of months left till the end of the school year, so I don't want to buy anything till September.  I think things will be a little more stable when I return in the fall.

I have been getting a lot of comments from people who haven't seen me in a while.  They are amazed at how much I've lost.  I guess that when I look in the mirror, I don't really notice the changes that much.

I am doing more walking and have begun bicycling to and from work, and also just to get some exercise.  I haven't been on a bike in over 30 years, so that's a big step for me.  It seems that if I don't get out and ride, I actually miss it.

My next job will be to update my pictures, but I'm trying to wait and lose another 11 lbs before updating them.  I'll see if I can wait that long!

Almost three months since my surgery, and the weight is coming off at a steady rate of about 3 lbs. a week.  It is really starting to show, and a lot of people are commenting when they see me around.  It's great hearing all of the encouraging people.  Since the surgery, I've lost 57 lbs and 82.5 lbs since I began the whole process at the beginning of October 2006.  It won't be too much longer before I reach the century mark.  It has been wonderful going into places like Old Navy, Steve and Barry's and just buying clothes off the rack.  I could never get anything that woud fit in those stores, so I used to shop at the Casual Male Big and Tall store.  I hope I never have to set foot in there again!  Woo Hoo!

I have been extremely busy since surgery and have not had a chance to catch my breath. I really haven't been doing any serious exercise on a regular basis but now that I am returning to work, I will also begin my regular workouts.  I am pleased with the progress so far, but things have slowed down quite a bit over the last couple of weeks.  But that is fine, and the weight is still coming off.  I guess my body just needs time to process all of the changes going on.

February 18, 2007

It's the first time I've weighed myself since getting home.  This is a weekly thing on the men's board.  We weigh in each week and post our results.  It's a way of keeping honest and supporting each other on our weight loss journey.  I posted for the first time this week.  It felt pretty good writing down the numbers.  I can't believe that only 7 more lbs. and I'll be under 300 for the first time in over 16 years.

February 13, 2007

I'm back home after my surgery and on my way to shedding these extra pounds.  I had an uneventful surgery, (which is good) and recovery in the hospital.  Dr. O'Malley and his staff were wonderful, to say the least.  I was discharged on Wednesday morning and moved into the hotel for the remainder of the week in Rochester.  By Friday, my wife and I were in the malls walking and shopping.  I had my staples out on Monday morning and headed home at 3:30.  Arrived in the doorway at 8:00p.m.

Got a Date!!  Dr. O'Malley's office called on Wednesday with my surgery date of February 5, 2007.  I will be joining all you losers that afternoon.  I can't wait for the journey to begin.  Thanks everyone for all of your support
