I am 5 months post-op today (4-20-2007) and finally decided to tell my story. I had RNY surgery the Monday before Thanksgiving (11-20-2006) after waiting 2 long years for insurance approval. It was also 6 days before my 45th birthday! What a birthday present to myself - getting my life back!!! I weighed in at a whopping 342 lbs and was going downhill fast. I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes about 5 years ago and have been on medication ever since. It started out with just a couple of meds and by the time I went in for surgery, I was on 9 a day for Diabetes & cholesterol. Needless to say, I was dying a slow and miserable death. I received the call on 11-1-2006 that my surgery had been approved by the insurance company and I was finally able to schedule a surgery date after waiting for a very, very long time (seemed like eternity with obstacle after obstacle). So what if it was just before the holidays ... I didn't care. My life was much more important than any Thanksgiving turkey dinner.

I had only told a select few friends and family that I was even considering the surgery because I didn't want anyone to know in case it didn't happen. Those 4 or 5 people that knew about my journey up until the point when I finally had a surgery date set, were very supportive of my decision. Once the date was set, my Mom began to really worry that something would go wrong. I kept telling her that I was not nervous or worried at all, but very excited and felt that God had finally answered my prayers in His own time and He would see me through it all. I was mentally and physically ready for the surgery. I set up a "count down" calendar from Nov. 1st until Nov. 20th and got more and more excited as I crossed off each and every day. Finally, Monday morning (11-20) finally rolled around and I was up at 3:30 am and ready to begin my journey. I couldn't seem to get to the hospital fast enough (it was and hour and 15 minute drive from my house) and I had to be there at 6 am! My parents, my husband, and my 9 year old daughter all went with me to the hospital and was there with me throughout the surgery and recovery. Everything went well, just as I knew it would! God's angels were by my side every minute.
