John Pender

"My first impression of Dr. Pender was a bit less than positive. He was a bit too aloof for my taste. But over time, I came to really respect him. He is generally kind. He was very good with my family after my procedures, explaining the results to them and making sure they knew I was ok. During the pre-op process, he was very good about making sure that he answered any questions that I had and never seemed to be impatient with me for asking. My one caution would not be about Dr. Pender, but about his intern, a young man whose name I can't recall at the moment. He is very eager, I'm sure, but the result, in my experience, was that he did not listen to what I was trying to say, often cutting me off mid-sentence or being dismissive. rnrnDr. Pender is very attentive, post-op. I came in for regular appointment during the first year, and when a minor complication arose, he was all over it without hesitation. I will also be seeing him once a year for the duration, which doesn't seem to be the case with some other friends I know who have had the surgery. rnrnHe was very frank about the risks, never downplaying them compared to the benefits. He made clear that most were rare, but he also made equally clear that the risks were real. I appreciated that candor. "

Pitt County Memorial Hospital

"I have had really great experiences at PCMH. My only "complaint" is that when I was admitted for a separate medical issue, the staff outside of bariatrics didn't seem to be as familiar with the needs of post-op patients as I thought they would. I was early in my post-op experience, and I had a lot of trouble getting food that was appropriate and with getting the care providers to understand that I couldn't take certain medications or that I couldn't take them quickly. It became a bit frustrating in a couple of situations."
