I'm having the Realize Band surgery on May 20th, 2009.  I'm 42 years old and I've been really heavy my entire adult life.  I serious started looking into WLS in 2000, but gastric bypass seemed too invasive and life-changing for MY taste. Gastric banding appealed to me much more, but seeing that it was new, I didn't look into it seriously at the time.  Along comes 2008, and I'm finally sick and tired of being sick and tired.  So last year I began looking at banding again.  I had consultations and psych evaluations and everything all set up, and then had to cancel everything in order to care for my little sister who was struck with cancer for the 3rd time.  After eight months of treatment she was in remission.  It was now winter here in rural northern Michigan so I didn't want to start to process again until spring.  It was during this time that I found out I have Type II diabetes.  That was a HUGE slap in the face to me and pretty scary, too.  Spring finally came along, and I got my surgery scheduled.  I feel I've done alot of research and am realistic about what the band can and can't do for me.  My sister thinks her cancer might be active again, so I really want to get the surgery done and out of the way, so I can care for her again if she has to have more treatments.  She feels really bad about me putting if off last year and she is also anxious for me to have it done and start feeling better.  But hopefully, the cancer isn't back and I can just enjoy the process of having my Realize band, using it correctly to lose weight and getting healthier.
