Tasting my way through life..

Aug 08, 2011

I am no longer devouring my way through life.  I am 2 months post op and I can pretty much "taste" anything.  Yes, I said taste.  I don't have a whole portion of pretty much anything anymore.  I have a couple bites here and there.  I feel satisfied after such a small portion that I don't even want more of even the tastiest foods. I was worried that surgery would ruin my life because I conside myself a "foodie".  I love to cook, bake and taste!!! Now I just taste smaller bites and stop at a few bites.  I bake and cook still, but I use alternative foods for my favorites.

Examples:
low carb tortilla for my pizza crust
cauliflower for my mashed potatoes
nuts as my popcorn
SF pops and low carb ice cream  for my sweet tooth
protein shakes for my breakfast

It really doesn't get much easier. The first few weeks were hell, but now things have evened out. I am enjoying the foods I love but in new ways.

Your censor button is broken!

Jul 27, 2011

Dealing with how people react to me is pretty hard. Examples:
- In a meeting, my co-worker starts talking to me about his friend that had Gastric Bypass. OK hmmm I didn't have GB and no one in my office really knows what I had expect for some minor details.  I haven't lost that much weight sooo hmm.
- People saying, when you do your hair and make up you are really pretty. Only then? Ohh the rest of the time I must be monster-like. Hmmm.
- You are getting so thing, you are disappearing!  I am? I haven't changed ONE SINGLE PANT SIZE!! I can see the loss in my face but that is it. So hmmmm.
- Have you lost 100 lbs yet? Friend on the phone that knows about WLS. Ummm it has been 2 months and I barely have 100 to lose to begin with... Hmmmmmm

I have been shaking my head a lot lately at how idiotic some people can be.

On a lighter note, two months out and I am doing fine. Everything almost seems like I never had surgery to begin with. I can eat most anything, even drink while eating. I am just eating much less and still watching my carbs. I am not addicted or disappointed in the scale.

Starting to dislike OH

Jun 28, 2011

I have been a fan on www.verticalsleevetalk.com for some time now and now I remember why - the people on OH are MEAN! yes I said it - MEAN GIRLS. And most of them are Bandsters. Now I have nothing against the Band, in fact I started looking into the Band years ago.  Why does my surgery bother you so darn much? Do you want me to list the reasons I chose VSG over the Band? Why? So it will scare you about the complications of the Band? Seriously? Can't we just support each other? Can't I post something about a stall without the VSG backlash?!?!?!

Damn.

Woosah!

So far, so good. Nothing to write about really.  I am still on full liquids - thank goodness for SF pops and potato soup!! I am still having issues drinking enough water but I am working on it.

Approved, approved ... APPROVED!

Apr 12, 2011

YAY! Finally some good news!  I was approved on 4/1 - even though I didn't find out until 4/8.  In fact, I think I knew before my surgeon knew. Now I wait again, this time for a surgery dat and EGD.  Other than that, I am ready to go. Wish me luck .... because I am shaking in my plus size boots right now! :D

The waiting game

Mar 31, 2011

tick tock.. goes the clock. I wait.. every second seems to last a week.  Every day, a year long. Ok maybe I am being a bit dramatic but I was really hoping to be one of those super fast insurance approvals.

Anyway, my insurance stuff was turned in this week (I hope).

Wish me luck.

1 Seminar down!

Mar 09, 2011

So I went to the Bluegrass Bariatric seminar but *insert sad and confused face here* the Doctor was a no-show.  He had an emergency and could not make it to the seminar. Needless to say, I still have tons of questions.  The ladies from BG did a great job filling us in, but they didn't have much info on the VSG- only the Band. I am not opposed the Band but right now I am leaning more toward the Sleeve. We shall see what the Dr says when I meet him at intake - atleast, I hope I get to meet him! LOL

I am going to attend the seminar for Bariatric Associates of Louisville (the St Mary & Elizabeth) group - just to see what they have to say.  That group has no program fee, but they only do the Band. Hmm.. decisions, decisions.

Currently I have no co-mo's (look at me using that WLS lingo!!! Ohhh weee).  But the last couple days I have been extremely thirsty (drinking 50 oz of water and still thirsty) and yesterday my eyes went blurry. I thought it was a migraine (as I get them alot), took my meds and woke up today with the same thing.  I have drank almost 40 ox of water in 2-3 hours and not urinated, and my eyes are still quite blurry.  I got a little upset and called my VA Dr (spoke to a nurse).  They want me to come in first thing in the morning for a diabetes screening. ?!?!  Is this my hiddin co-mo?  I check my blood sugar every week or so, just because my mom has diabetes pretty bad, and my sugars are always within range. Anyway, the nurse said these are red flags of diabetes onset?!? We shall see. Not sure that is a good thing, unless it helps my insurance approval for WLS and it goes away with weight loss.

I will let you know what happens.

VSG vs Lap Band

Feb 28, 2011

So here I am, on my way for approval of LB and I find out my insurance covers VSG.  I worry that the LB will react badly inside my body because I don't do well with things like fake earrings, contacts etc.  Basically my body rejects foreign objects but I was assured LB would be different... HMMM.. I then went to look into RNY and found that since I need to loose just at 100lb, VSG may be a good option for me with less complications than RNY.

The bad part is that my Dr would have to change because I picked a group that only does LB. A local group (DR Odham) does the all of the procedures but they charge a program fee where as Louisville Surgical did not have a fee.  Either way, I am going to both seminars - one for each Dr - to see which program fits me best and which group I like better.
