Post-op, first day at home

Dec 22, 2011

I had Lap Gastric Bypass surgery on December 20, 2011 @ 10:00am. I have to say I was nervous as HELL. I was pretty confident until I was sitting in the OR waiting room being checked in and processed by all the wonderful and supportive nursing and medical staff at St. Agnes Hospital in MD. I was hit by a sudden overwhelming desire to flee. But Dr. Singh came in and told me that I was making the right choice and he was going to take excellent care of me, and he did!

I do feel i was unprepared for the pain afterwards. It wasn't actual pain, but pressure. The air they fill your belly with sat on top of my belly like a huge ball of pressure. I thought it was the incisions, but it was the air. I was so drgugged up...thinking it was pain, that I wasnt able to walk around the first night. Then the next morning about 5am, I relized it was the gas pain everyone talked about, and decided to give up the pain meds so I could get out of bed. That was the smartest thing ever!!! I then began walking every hour on the hour! It was painful at first, but so worth it after the air started to move and the pressure began to lift.

I was able to start liquids on wednesday, and then had puree foods yesterday (thursday). It wasnt pleasent at all! I am also learning how my new tummy works. I take bigger swollows then I should, and have learned to cut every sip in half.

It is hard to make myself eat, I havent had this feeling since I was home from having a c-section with my son. But I am trying to stick to a schedule and get my fluids and foods in like I am supposed to. I want to avoid any complications if I can!

So far, I have had 30oz water and a choc protein shake. I am working on my next set of fluids and preparing for lunch in my head. What to eat....

Wish me luck!
