A 6.5 Mile Spring-Time Hike

Mar 09, 2009

I did something yesterday that I could never have imagined doing when I was obese. I hiked - in the woods, over rough, hilly terrain - 6.5 miles.

That's right. ME! Bookish, nerdy, non-athletic, formerly obese me!

I hiked over six miles on a Sunday afternoon! It was hard - oh Lawdy, was it hard, but I did it! Even when I was tired and wishing I was back in my car in the parking lot, I was conscious of how grateful I am to be able to do things like that. I'm really proud of myself.

Today I wore a really cute dress to work that I love and that has sentimental value to me. I bought it in an outdoor market in a little town in Northern Italy last year. Every time I wear it I have fond memories of the months I spent there. I was able to do so much and really enjoy getting out to see things without worrying that people were staring at the obese me or worrying that people were laughing at me when I ordered food. I was also physically able to do lots more than I could have before the gastric bypass.

The fun thing, though, was knowing that I could buy that little dress for five Euros without even trying it on, confident that they would have my size and that it would fit me. I grin every time I wear it.

Love,
