Eating Struggles

Apr 12, 2008

So after a few days of looking at how I eat food, I have had a revelation.  I am definitely a snacker.

For the longest time I never understood why it was that I gained so much weight when I never even finished any of my meals and now I have an idea so here it goes:

1. Starbucks Mochas - love 'em and up until now thought they were completely harmless if they were made with low-fat milk. WRONG! Drank 1-2 every day.

2. Loaded Nachos - Sorry, don't have any nutrional info on this but I am pretty sure my piled high nachos 2-3 times per week was part of the problem.

3. David sunflower seeds - This one was the killer. I ate them nightly and these are the nutrional facts:

Its not that I am an overeater, its more like I'm a nibbler. I munch on something all night long. I never finish my dinner but come back for more later over and over again. I'll eat a little of this and a little of that  ALL DAY LONG.  Well those calories add up. Like my nutrition professor said in class, If you intake more than you expel than you are going to gain weight.  He said my body is like a bank, if the food is money and I am depositing more money than I am withdrawing (in this case with excercise) I will carry the high balance at the end of the month. It does not matter in caloric terms how much I food eat at a sitting, it matters that I am taking in way to many calories period.

Today I went shopping at the supermarket. I thought about the food choices I've been making and purchased lean meats and low fat cheeses and yogurt. I felt good.

Ok. I admit it. I went shopping after being ashamed of how I ate today. I had a Wendy's cheeseburger w/ mayo and a small fries - no drink. I had 1 iced mocha and a reg. coffee later today. I also had nachos w/ cheese, black beans and grilled chicken for lunch. Are you happy now? I've confessed. Now I am going to bed and I'll start fresh tomorrow. Hopefully I can do better with my food choices and lose some of this pre surgery weight.

Today according to my home scale, I weigh 215 - if thats right than I lost 2 lbs.!

Surgery Consultation

Apr 09, 2008

Yesterday was my consult with Dr. Baggs. I think he is an all around sweet guy and I look foward to working with him. He thinks I am a good canidate for the RNY gastric bypass which scares the crap out of me. Its not that I don't think he is right, its just that the thought of severe complications and the increased rate of death for RNY is what has me in sweats. He said that he only recommends LapBand for his older paitents and other paitents with complications. Plus the fact that I am african american could be a potential problem as he has reported that his african american paitents do not see a as good outcome in terms of weight loss with Lapband. He wants me to lose maximum weight and I don't blame him.  So armed with this info, I talked to my husband later that day and he said "No way am I letting you get RNY!". You gotta love him for caring so much and he is probably right too, I mean the rate of complications for this surgery is 1 in 3 with no certainty that the surgery will actually work. Gallstones, hernias, neurological damage alone has been reported in one study to be in 5 percent of the participants. Anyway I am totally thinking that Lap Band might be the way to go. I mean I have a 2 year old why incur anymore risk than needed. It would be great if you guys out there could weigh in on this issue and let me know your personal experiences with both. Oh yeah --- my weight as of yesterday is 217.
