First day back to work

Jun 29, 2009

Two weeks after surgery and I started back to work.  Got up feeling funky again.  I cannot figure out what is the deal.  Maybe it is because by morning, I am weak with hunger.  Or maybe my body is just shutting down and going into hibernation.  And maybe I need to kick it into gear.  And maybe I am not getting the right balance of protein, and other things.  Third week on liquid diet and the protein shake looks like misery to me.

So, we headed to work and stopped at the Food Store.  I got some Lite and Lively Dannon Yoghurts (lowest in sugar) and hoped the fruit was on the bottom so I could avoid it while getting some of the syrup for taste.  Not quite legal yet, but I was desperate. Unfortunately, it was mixed but it definitely made me feel better during my morning meeting.

Graduate students looked at me funny.  I know the weight loss is evident and I probably look drawn, but I expect they were wondering if I am sicker than I admit.  I haven't made the surgery public-- just admitted the gall bladder removal and the hernia repair.  One student only knows, at least I think.   And one colleague at this place.  Lots of welcome backs.  It was nice to see everyone, but the work was daunting.  My adm. associate had quit due to a very poor communiction from a supervisor (an ultimatum that was not supposed to be one) and now I have a national conference to pull off without support.   Thoughtless.
Funny how those who do the most work in a place can be the most vulnerable.

I had a good lunch with the Director and my hubby and we talked through the timing and priorities of few issues.

Then a wonderful afternoon meeting but near the end the leg nerve pains acted up and I realized I was TIRED.  Begged off the rest of the meeting and came home.  Fell sound asleep.  My dear husband found me a chiropractor to work on my leg pains tomorrow.  Worke up in time to go swimming  (30 laps) and to see the 18 year olds romping in the pool playing pool basketball.  A real summer's evening.  Now I will do my food diary, have some dinner and relax.  I am fighting the worries about how behind I am but one day at a time.

Cheers.
