3 months post-op

Mar 25, 2008

Well, it's 3 months since surgery and I'm down 56 pounds, but down 90 pounds overall from last May.  I feel really good, but don't feel smaller in my head.  I'm down 5 pants sizes and 2 blouse sizes.  My family lives in California, so no one has seen me yet.  I'm traveling out there in August, and am anxious to see how they react.  Hopefully, I'll be even smaller by then.

My husband is incredible.  He's been with me through all the bad (fat) times, and is even more loving now.  Of course I did this for health reasons, but having him happier makes me happy too.  Plus, getting to shop for cuter clothes isn't bad either!!

I've been blessed with meeting new people on this website.  Without their help and support, this would be a very difficult journey.

I have the best surgeon as well.  I won't see Dr. Davis until April when I go for a post op exam, and am looking forward to seeing him again, to see if he remembers the old me and the new one that is emerging.

one month post-op

Surgery was 12-26-07.  Surgeon was Dr. Garth Davis in Houston, TX, although I live in NM.  Had to stay at a Marriott near the medical center, not a nice place and had an incident I'll be writing the CEO about later.  Surgery went great, however, I was in recovery for 3 hours as I never come out of anesthesia very well, but that's just me.  The first two weeks, I felt very tired and a little depressed, just from the surgery, I'm sure.  Wish I had been given more information on nutrition from the class I attended, but hopefully will be able to find more from support groups and researching on the computer.  My Dr. was fantastic!  Very caring and knowledgeable.  There were few annoyances from hospital staff immediately after surgery.  One was a "PCA" nurses aide who wouldn't help me get out of bed, as she said, "you'll pull my arm out of the socket".  I thought that was poorly handled by her.  The RN helped me sit up instead.  Couldn't have any water or ice when I awoke, and my lips were stuck to my teeth!  Also had that hoarse voice/throat from the breathing tube they use in surgery.  I was ready to walk around the hospital floor corridor the next day and did so several times/day.  Was so fortunate to have a private room.  The rooms at TMC are decorated with cherry wood furniture that could rival some hotels.  Had to stay in Houston for two weeks, as Dr. Davis wants his "out-of-towners" nearby in case of complications, of which I never had.  Have been home now almost two weeks and can't be happier to be in my own bed.  Having some pain under the incision where the staples are, as I have a pulled muscle there, probably from trying to roll over in bed, as I'm not a back sleeper.  Walking is helping me feel better and I'm using a treadmill.  I'm finding it hard to get in all my water, as I used to guzzle it, but can only sip now.  And with the schedule of not drinking 30 minutes before and after eating, takes up valuable time.  Also wish they had set up more examples of meals to get in protein and tell me if there were restrictions on certain food groups and what amounts I could have.  I'm sure it's just a matter of learning and experimenting.  Have not had any dumping, as I've been going by the book, so to speak.  Not too hungry, but am ready to eat when it's time, 3 times/day, about every 4-5 hours.  Now I'll be seeking a support group or friend who's gone thru the same thing.  Boy, there's nothing more boring that listening to someone who's on a diet, and I'm sure my friends and family are sick of hearing about my daily trials by now.  HA!!
