LINDA~~ I have a letter that I sent to my sister when I asked her to support my decision... you are welcome to copy it (and change it as needed) and forward it on to your sister... It might help her understand

HI Linda - I have a few comments for your sister. for her #1 - the same reason a person with diabetes has to count sugar to CONTROL it - the same reason people with high blood pressure take medication, to CONTROL it - keep in mind no one I know has ever CHOOSEN to get a disease but they have CHOOSEN to control it. #2 - DO you want applause for not making fun of the MO - that is called being kind and being a Christian! As far as you back goes you obviously are not the one who should be handling these patients if you can not take it. Get another nurse, get better equiptment at the hospital but DO NOT blame these people! #3 - that was a great article, written by a thin person who has never had a problem. DO you think people get to be MO because they think it is fun? I can guarantee there is an emotional problem attached to each one of us. A problem so deep to us that we can not push away and go for a walk, but it is not physical so people do not SEE that part! YOU need to be a bit more compassionate to your fellow humans and sister! Try to understand instead of argue! #4 - I do not allow discrimination of any kind to affect me or my family so if it affects you then look at what YOU can do to change! #5 - see #3! Have a wonderfully thin day!

Linda, I had friends and family members question me and my decision for weight loss surgery. They all had the same attitude as your sister. "Just eat less" "Go to the gym" "Why can't you just do it on your own?" What do I say? Maybe I am weak. I never could keep the weight off. Once I did pretty good for a few years but that was with the aid of phen-fen. I had to eat right, excersize, and take diet pills to keep the weight somewhat under control. I was always miserable and stressed about the weight. Even at the times when I did not appear to have a weight problem, the underlining fact was I did. It was in my every thought. Please understand some people can not relate to your struggle. How could they possibly understand? Tell your sister that unfortunatly a good majority of the public is considered obese and that this surgery is last resort to make final resoltion to this weight problem. We wish it was some easy mind altering fix, but obviuosly it isn't. My friends and family are so happy for me now. They tell other obese people how wonderful this surgery is. This attitude is a total 180 from the months leading up to the surgery when they all thought I was crazy and tried to talk me out of it. HANG IN THERE!
