My name is LaToya and I'm 29 years old.  I started my journey in July 2005.  That's when I finally made up my mind to have the Gastric Bypass surgery.  I was always big.  I went from a plump toddler, to a chubby kid, to a fat teenager, and now a super obese adult.  My whole family is overweight so I get it honest.  I now am at a point in my life where my quality of life is being affected by my weight.  I use to be able to do what the skinny girls did but within the last year, my knees and back is always hurting.  I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and I'm a borderline diabetic.  So its time I do something about it.

In July 05, I went to the seminar with Dr. Higa who I must say that I like a lot.  I learned about all the different surgeries that I'm able to have.  Of course I have chosen to have the RNY surgery done laproscopically so that I'll heal faster.  So being that I had Blue Shields HMO, that meant I had to jump through hoops.  First, I had to get a referral from my PCP (Primary Care Physician) to the Weight Management center for me to set up and appt with them.  Then I had to do six months of appointments with the weight management center.  Which meant I had to talk to the Nurse Practitioner about my eating habits and then to the Dietician about how I'm suppose to eat.  Then I had to go through all these different tests and lab work.  Oh and that's how I found out I had high blood pressure.  I went in to the doctors office for a papsmear and came out with high blood pressure!  How does that happen?

So after 8 months at the weight management center, I finally got the ok to make an appt to see the surgeon, but of course that took two more months.  In the meantime, I received a good job offer and had to leave my previous place of employment which meant I was without insurance for another three months.  So then I finally got an appt. with the Surgeon on Nov. 1st of this year.  He said I'm a good candidate for the surgery.  So, they had to transcribe my stuff and then send it to the insurance company.  Well last Wednesday (11/22), I got my surgery date.  I am schedule to have surgery on January 9th, 2007!!!  I'm so excited and can't wait to start my new life.
