My name is Laura and I have decided to have the RNY(Gastric Bypass) surgery after thinking about it for 2 years. I have made this decision after careful thought, research & talking to my sister who`s a registered Dietician that has worked in a Bariatric center for many years. She now has her own office and sees patients with all sorts of nutritional issues. She agreed that it was a smart decision, and is behind me 100% .

At the young age of 19 I had my first son. All was good, and I was healthy and a size 7. Within the first year I noticed my body changing. Without changing my diet, my weight seemed to creep up slowly for no reason! My pant size kept getting bigger, and my cycle was incredibly irregular. My face was breaking out and I felt as if my body had been someone elses!
At the age of 28 I got married and soon after I saw a doctor who diagnosed me with PCOS(Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) I had never heard of it. I then saw an Endocrinologist, and was put on Metformin to help with my insulin resistance. The weight kept creeping up.

Years later, after trying to concieve I finally had 2 more sons. It wasn`t that easy since I wasn`t ovulating regularly.
After researching PCOS and seeing many doctors, I realized how serious PCOS was. The future I had was filled with horrible possibilities, like ovarian cancer, diabetes, infertility,Ovarian cysts (which can be painful, trust me)Endometrial cancer, lipid abnormalities, cardiovascular risks, ect. I had to lose this weight! But with Hypothyroidism, and my condition I could only lose up to 10-15 lbs, I would hit a plateau..This awful disease usually causes you to have horrible hormone abnormalities, and weight gain. But with weight loss you have a better chance and fewer symptoms, like normal periods & less chance of getting all the horrible side effects.Weight loss would help me tremedously my doctors would tell me.

Years later, (I am now 42) I have made the decision to have Gastric Bypass done. I have gone to the seminar, seen the surgeon, Dietician, went to a support group, and just made an appointment to see the Psychiatrist for an evaluation since my insurance requires it.

Already i`ve heard friends saying to me, are you sure? That`s a dangerous operation! Can`t you just exercise?
I knew I would also hear horror stories. People think that this is a quick fix, or a way to lose weight instead of dieting, taking the easy way out! What they don`t know is that this is a whole life change. Very serious. My life will never be the same. I will have to eat entirely different, and check my protein intake, calories and portions. There`s many things I cannot have anymore, and i`m ok with this because I will become a healthier woman who will add years onto my life and be here for my children & grandchildren.

Now here I am on my journey to a healthier me. I cannot wait to finally find my old self in my body again. Because I know she is in there, healthy and I am excited to see her again.
