Had my first consultation.

Nov 20, 2010

OK...... Its November 19 and I had my first consultation with my surgeon yesterday and all went great. I did get some bad news though, well we all know that I am a diabetic and Ive been slowly and steadily loosing weight on my own (hard as hell). well I'm now down almost 20 lbs and that is GREAT news for me but it also lowers my BMI to 34.5, which no longer qualifies me for surgery(as far as my health insurance is concerned.........WTF????) This is the first time that loosing weight is actually "a BAD thing". So what do I "DO" now?? gain some weight or hope that they will cover the surgery anyway. UGH..........

The GOOD news is that I don't have to do a million things as requirements for my insurance. For the next 12 months................
I have to have a weight management coach which I will have to check in with on a monthly basis(over the phone) and I have to sign up with a weight management program such as Weight Watchers which I can do on-line since I am a bazillion miles from anything...lol.
I also have to do a nutrition evaluation and a psych evaluation and that's it!! (I hope)

Also.............. because of my diabetes the Dr recommends that I have the Gastric Bypass surgery done instead of the Sleeve. He said that I can walk out of the hospital 2 days after my surgery and be diabetes free. WOW Diabetes FREE......... that alone would be worth having the surgery done.
I have my evaluations appointment the beginning of December and whats great about that is that everything is done in office, they have their own nutritionist and psychologist so I don't have to go anywhere else.  I LOVE THAT!!!
The Dr had me do some lab work.     22 tests and 11 vials of blood later.............   Yeah I was in shock too.   You'd think that I needed to be pushed out of the hospital in a wheel chair after all that......lol
Anyway...........till next time.

The beginning of a beautiful thing.

Nov 11, 2010

Its the end of July and I am visiting with my PCP to discuss WLS. I have decided to have the Lap-Band (least invasive), we discuss it a lil bit and she tells me that she will need to monitor my weight  for at least 6 months and that I need to have a few things tested in the mean time. I am a diabetic and because of that she puts me on a new medication to better control my sugar (injection), one of the benefits of this is weight loss.
After a month I go back to see her and I had lost about 6 pounds (WOO HOO)........ so the process begins, I check in with her every month for 4 months, at the 4th visit she tells me that its time to refer me to a Bariatric surgeon. She tells me about this seminar that is held at the hospital and that it would be good for me to go. She also told me that once there, I could further discuss WLS with them and make necessary appts and take it from there.

Its Monday, November the 8th and I am going to the WLS seminar at Southside Regional Medical Center. I am taking my husband as my support person because he is my rock and he will be with me through it all. The seminar is about an hour and a half long and the surgeon will be explaining the 3 different types of surgeries. I have done my homework online and have changed my mind from the Lap-Band to the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy. This is the type of surgery I want to have done but I guess that the Dr. will know which type of surgery will benefit me the most.
The seminar was great and we learned many new things that we were not aware of. We got to meet with Dr. Datta and ask him questions. I filled out some forms and even went a step further and had pre printed all the necessary forms that the Dr. Datta needed as well (medical history, release forms, etc...). I left the seminar feeling very happy and confident that this is the right thing and the best thing for me and MY life.

Its Tuesday, November 9th and my phone rings, its the Dr. office, they want to set up an appointment for a consultation with the Dr.  OMG.......... they work fast, I expected to hear from them within a few days but not the day after the seminar. I am beyond excited at this point. I made the appt for Thursday, November the 18th. I hung up the phone and quickly told my husband about the good news and then called my sister and told her.

So I guess its now official..... I have started my journey to the new ME!!
