Questions about VSG

May 20, 2018

Are there any of you who have had VSG and have developed gerd post-op? I was told by my surgeon that there is a 20% chance of getting gerd from VSG surgery. If so how bad is it? Medication needed?

i have been approved and am having my surgery on July 13th at Humber River Hospital with Dr. Huynh. I am so excited and nervous!

Orientation date

Oct 29, 2017

Thank you to those who advised me to call and check in on my status. The booking department at Humber River finally told me that my orientation date is October 31, 2017. I had to call back three times to get the date and after waiting for the orientation package that never came, they provided me the package on line. I filled out the survery and copied the necessary reports (sleep apnea), and visited my family doctor to have him complete medical survey. I can't believe I am actually finally beginning this journey.

Still waiting, gaining and losing the same 5 pounds!

Oct 16, 2017

Hi All

I was referred to the surgery program in Ontario in mid-July 2017 at Humber River Hospital. Still waiting for the "envelope" for the orientation date. Called into the office twice and still no information. I called again today and left a message. Hope to hear from them.

In the meantime, I have been trying to change my lifestyle using expert advice from a naturopath and the info I received from the medical program in which I lost and gained back about 45 lbs in the two years. I have seen lost about 40 lbs, eating clean foods, exercising by walking, and joining two strength training/cardio classes at the local community center. Proud of my accomplishments. The problem is that old habits sneak in. I tell myself that I am in control, not the food and then I just binge!! I have lost and gained the same 5 pounds for the last month or more. I am actually looking forward to gum surgery in a few weeks so that I can lose weight and hopefully keep it off just to get off this merry-go-round.

My plan was to build strong healthy habits by eating clean and by exercising so that when I have the surgery which will probably take up to a year, then I have the building blocks to maintain the major loss from the surgery. I am so afraid that I just can't do it. That I will regain all the weight back over the next year or have the surgery and be part of the minority that gains it all back!!!

I am also frustrated waiting for this letter for the surgical program. I feel like it will never come and I am going to lose momentum. Feeling sorry for myself. Not trusting myself. Feeling stuck.

Just needed to vent in this forum. Many of you may have had similar feelings. Any advice?

That Sugar Film

Aug 27, 2017

Yesterday, I watched the Netflix documentary, That Sugar Film. It is a must for those who have ever struggled with weight, diabetes or other inflammatory diseases,  parents and really anybody!!! I know that I am supposed to limit sugar consumption, but this documentary gives a whole other perspective in a personal and funny way. We are health washed into believing we are eating right and yet sugar is everywhere. Avoiding junk food is not enough-any processed food is a science Sugar experiment. And we are the mice!!!

I need to rewatch it every so often to remind me of the toll sugar has on our health.

New to VSG journey

Aug 20, 2017

Hi All

I live in Ontario, Canada and have signed up for the Bariatric surgery program in Ontario. Two years ago, I joined the Medical programme and lost 45 lbs and I gained it all back almost to the very pound. Feeling frustrated, I went back to the doctor in charge of the programme this past March 2017 and began the OPTI shakes again. I am also seeing a naturopath for lifestyle changes and help with inflammation. Also seeing a physiotherapist for heel spurs which kept me from exercising and taking daily walks. So far, I have lost 32 lbs since March 2017.

I also went to get advice from a bariatric surgeon and she was amazing. She told me that the risks of laprascopic bariatic surgery are almost non-existent. She told me about how bariatric surgery is basically the only way to lose weight AND KEEP IT OFF!!!! You do have to maintain a healthy balanced diet and exercise program. She registered me for the surgery programme and I am now waiting to find out when my orientation date is scheduled. She suggested I continue with my lifestyle changes both diet and exercise. I see my naturopath, physiotherapist and joined a strength-training, weights and cardio exercise class at the local community . I am also doing the exercises daily on lumowell (7 min HIIT exercise and other good videos on lumowell). The surgeon explained that our bodies are programmed to go back to our set point. This is why most people gain their weight back and MORE!!!

(Set point is the weight range in which your body is programmed to function optimally. Set point theory holds that one's body will fight to maintain that weight range. ... In the first few weeks of dieting, weight is usually lost, but it is almost always gained back.)

The bariatric surgery resets your set point. So I am trying to lose as much as weight as I can and get more fit at a rate that is reasonable for me and doesn't become overwhelming or hard to maintain and will become the way I eat and exercise for the rest of my life.

Just wanted to tell my story and hope to hear from others who are on a similar journey. Would love to hear from those who have also had the bariatric sleeve surgery.

Wishing all of you good health and joy!!
