Day Six

Sep 07, 2008

Ok, I'm six days out. Surgery was Tuesday morning. All I can say is if you are in the Phila/Suburban area, Dr. Williams is the way to go. He has got to be one of the best Dr's I've ever come in contact with. I went to the hospital alone as my son was starting college that day and my mom's been sick. Dr Williams came over while I was in the Preadmit room getting my IV. He sat on the bed and talked me out of my nervousness reminding me of what a journey this has been and how happy I'll be when it's over. They numbed my hand so I didnt feel the IV go in at all. Once in the operating room, everyone was fantastic. The anestiologist told me I looked nervous. I looked at him like he was nuts and told him I was about to get operated on. He said, "oh ok, you can be nervous, I guess I'm the one who isn't supposed to be nervous". He yelled over to the guy behind me that Ms Kline needs a shot of super duper no more nervous medicine, it was 11:40am when he said that. Next thing I remember was looking up and seeing a blurry clock that said 4:05pm. They took me to my room with the compression stockings and my all time favorite piece of hospital equipment; the pain pump. I walked twice around the ward about three hours later, and did it four times at 11:00pm. I had a decent enough night and Dr. Williams came to visit me the next day at 4:00pm. He looked at my incisions, obviously asked me if I had any bodily functions and then said I could go home if I wanted. Now, I'm trying to learn what I can and can't tolerate on liquids as some seem to be more comfortable than others. I go see the Dr again on Sept 12 for a weight check and hopefully the green light to graduate to some baby food or something :)

Round Two

Aug 26, 2008

Well, it's been three years since my first failed surgery and I'm back on the surgery list. This has been the most annoying, time consuming, and at times, disappointing process....however, the Lords and Masters at my insurance company have finally seen fit to approve my request. And I'm pretty sure they are sick of me. So anyway, I was approved for the Lap Band on September 2, 2008. I heard from my insurance company on August 5, 2008 that they were approving my surgery. The last time I saw Dr. Williams was June of 2007. I spent 6 months in a supervised weight loss program with my PCP plus I had to do the 80 million tests, (upper GI, Chest Xray, Sleep Studies, etc....only to get denied in December 07, April 08 and June 08. So Dr. Williams looked a little shocked to see him, again. It was either shock or disappointment that after three years I actually weighed exactly (well one pound less) than I did in June of 2007. I told him that I tried the gym thing, only to blow out my knee and my Achilles Tendons...and a supervised diet with my PCP. He said he 'might be able to schedule surgery within 30 days if I redid ......(and he rattled off about ten more tests". I'm pretty sure the room shook a little as my head prepared to explode. I told him that I can't possibly wait another 30 days and all but begged for a sooner date. I forgot to mention that my appointment was scheduled for 12:45pm and it was not 4:15pm. His secretary came in and almost jokingly said, 'you want to have this Sept 2" I jumped up and said 'absolutely'...Dr. Williams came in a couple minutes later and asked how I got her to schedule me on the 2nd...so I'm not sure I was supposed to accept that date or maybe she was just kidding...oh well, either way, she sent me right downstairs for a chest xray, ekg, and blood work. I called me PCP the next day for an updated medical clearance. I had a broken tooth fixed today just in case they made an issue of it and I begged and pleaded the sleep apnea Dr to write me a new script for the CPAP people to give me new tubing, mouthpiece, etc because that stupid thing has been sitting in my closet collecting dust since the last surgery in June of 2005. I stopped taking my arthritis medicine Sunday so I've had no NSAIDS for the later of 7-10 days. And I think I've covered every base!!!! So, wish me luck this time that the next post I make says I've on the losing side this time!!!!!
