Questions Answered

Dec 29, 2008

Welcome, Visitor!  I have posted the answers to one of my "questioners" because people like have answers to common questions about the gastric bypass...here it is...I hope you find it useful! Email me if you have more!!

Question
How did you decide which type to have?  Why not a lap band?

Well, I thought carefully about the choices for years.  I deliberated over it.  It is not an easy choice.  Some people opt for the band thinking it will be easier, and that they will be able to absorb all of the nutrients they need this way.  I decided the full bypass would be better because with it, people have been shown, overall, to be less hungry.  And, with the band, there has been a lot of slippage to occur.  The band can slip down, or even up the intestine causing pain and discomfort.  This requires additional operations, and therefore, is more risk.  Also, with the band, there is a need to go to the doctor to have the band filled if you are eating too much or too little.  They stick a needle into a "port"  which is just under the surface of your gut.  Sound like fun?  Not to me.  lolol...

Question

I am so interested in the operation. I am about 20 lbs. overweight so don't qualify.

20 lbs overweight isn't bad.  It is really quite good!  I am proud of you for keeping your weight down!  If you are concerned, you could increase your protein intake, and see if that boosts your metabolism...

Question

I so admire your courage to do this thing. You are a brave lady.

Thanks for saying so.  I was very scared.  Very.  In fact, I cancelled my first surgery.  Then, 1 month later, by some strange fate, I was diagnosed with diabetes.  So, I decided I HAD to go through with it, no matter what the cost, because I didn't want to end up where my mom is...with heart problems and eventually (possibly) with a stroke.  I scheduled the surgery and my mind sort of played a trick on me that day.  I remember thinking, ok, if I am going through with this today, I am not going to care if I live or die.  I'm just not going to care.  That is how I got through making myself do it.  Strange, huh?  But I still shook like the dickens, so ya know I cared. lol...

Question

Do you have a problem with excess skin?

Actually no, I don't have a problem with it.  I am one of the lucky ones.  I was afraid that I would but so far, after losing 104 lbs, I do not have hanging skin.  Thank God.  I have a feeling I might, though, if I lose much more.

Question

I have read everything I can as I am fascinated by the process.  I can't diet anymore at 67. I just don't care but wish I could get motivated to walk more. I am very lazy. I keep the two horses as it forces me to do some exercise walking to the barn to feed them . They are too old to ride and are retired.

Yes, you are right, it probably isn't a good idea for you to diet.  I don't think you are really heavy at all!!  I think you are fine.  Tone the muscles, but that's it...we could ALL use that!!  Besides, you ARE getting exercise, it sounds like..

Question

It is saving so many lives and stopping diabetes, etc. in people who can't diet.   Absolutely!  I was headed down the wrong road!  I was taking 2 diabetic medications after I was diagnosed, and I felt horrible all the time.  I wasn't healthy.  Now I no longer need ANY diabetic meds and my diabetes has disappeared.  The doc says to check it but he says I am good.

THAT’S IT FOR NOW GUYS, HOPE IT HELPS YOU!!!
