3 Years and Counting!

Jun 29, 2010

I don't know where to start. So much has happened and in some ways I am in awe that I had my surgery over 3 years ago. I am now living in Virginia Beach and am engaged to a wonderful man. Looking at my life now I can say that I am truly happy and do not regret one bit having had Gastric Bypass Surgery. Every day is a struggle be it with battling my food addiction, battling my twisted self image issues, still feeling like I weigh 250lbs and fearing that every time my weight fluctuates I am going to be the "fat Courtney" again. This entire ordeal has been a complete mind trip to say the least.

Some awesome things I've accomplished since surgery:
1. Ran an entire half marathon for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and raised over $5K. It took me 2hrs and 40mins but I did it.
2. I can now say that I have experienced at least once what it feels like to enter a room, bar, social setting, etc. and have a man's head turn to watch me. I used to feel like if any heads turned it was out of disgust at how overweight I was. What a nice difference!
3. I successfully freed myself of toxic relationships both boyfriend and friendships and can now truly appreciate and take people at face value.
4. I have accepted myself for who I am inside. Losing 90lbs forced me to realize that a lot of the issues I had going on in my life were not due to my weight problem. My weight problem was my scape goat and it was very upsetting to be even more depressed and sad at 140lbs when I thought I would be on cloud nine 24/7.
5. I am a nicer person in general and thank God for each day that I wake up and am blessed and can enjoy my new life.

Much love!

6 Months Post-Op

Oct 16, 2007

Yesterday morning I weighed 149.5lbs. That is a total loss of 70.5lbs and only 19.5lbs more until goal. I was supposed to have a six month post-op appointment today at the hospital but had to reschedule due to not being able to get out of work. My appointment is on the 29th now. I'm also a little disappointed because my RN has been transfered to another ward and my doctor is currently deployed. I can't complain but I guess this is what you deal with when going to a military hospital.
My best friend got home from Iraq last night and it was so great to see him. He didn't know I had the surgery and left before I had it done so you can imagine the look on his face when I came to pick him up. His jaw hit the floor and he said that I am hot now. I must admit it does feel good to receive compliments.
As far as my health goes I'm feeling well. I think the hair loss has slowed down a lot and I'm still getting in as much protein and all of my vitamins. Every day I wake up I can't believe how lucky I am and remind myself how grateful I am that everything has gone so smoothly.

23 Weeks Post-Op

Oct 08, 2007

This morning I weighed 153lbs. I only have 23lbs more until goal! I've been getting very worried because I've noticed that I can eat a lot more than I've been able to the past couple of months. I am also afraid that I'm going to become obsessive about what I'm eating. Basically I'm just trying my hardest to make the healthiest decisions possible. I've been eating 1200 calories a day and if I can get under that I do. I'm wearing size 6 clothes in pretty much all stores - Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, etc. I bought a pair of Citizens of Humanity jeans yesterday and they were waist 28. I was shocked that I could put them on. Anyways, I know it has been awhile since I wrote. I was on travel for two weeks and also went home again. I've been interviewing for jobs in the Virginia Beach area. I cannot wait to move! It will be awesome being closer to my family. That's all for now.

19 Weeks Post-Op

Sep 10, 2007

This morning I weighed 159.5lbs. That makes a total weight loss of 60.5lbs in 19 weeks. I was actually surprised to see that I lost 2.5lbs this past week because I didn't work out at all and made myself start eating more even when I wasn't hungry. Hopefully this means that it worked but this whole surgery makes things very difficult to determine.
I got my hair cut very short on Friday night. Makes it look like I have a lot more hair and hopefully will help mask the fact that my hair is totally thinning out. I've been diligent about my protein and vitamin intake so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this won't last too much longer. I think it has been going on for about six weeks now. So far no one has noticed other than myself and my hair stylist but we'll see!
I really don't have much else to write about. Life has been pretty simple these days. I'm leaving on Sunday for a two week business trip that I'm really NOT looking forward to whatsoever. I already figured out that there is a Gold's Gym close to where I'll be staying so if anything else I'll just workout like crazy for the two weeks I'm stuck in Rock Island, Illionis!

18 Weeks Post Op - Size 8!!

Sep 05, 2007

I'm two days late with this post but I just got home from my Labor Day trip home to Virginia. I'm a size 8 now which I never thought I would hear myself say. My sister sent me a bunch of clothes that she wore when she was fat and I fit into all of them. I've never been able to borrow clothes from one of my sisters. I'm feeling much better now taking the chewable iron daily. I'm also trying my best to make sure I get enough rest each night. I weigh 162lbs now which puts my total loss up to 58lbs. Pretty exciting if you ask me. I wish I had something more interesting to write about but there really isn't much to report on. I've still been working out but need to do more weight training. I officially have bat wings. Not cool.

17 Weeks Post-Op

Aug 27, 2007

So it looks like I may have hit my first stall. I weighed 164.5lbs this morning which means I only last 1/2 a pound this past week. I exercised five days this past week but I think I could have gotten in more fluids. Instead of getting frustrated I'm going to look at this as a challenge and I'm going to work even harder this week to make sure I stick to my plan and do my best. I'm going home on Thursday morning which I'm really looking forward to. I worked 65 hours last week and will be working 14 hour days today, tomorrow and Wednesday but it will all be worth it when I get on the plane Thursday morning. I'm really looking forward to a five day break from my busy daily routine. I didn't get to rest nearly as much as I would have liked to this weekend as I was super busy getting everything ready for my trip. I just need to make sure I'm in bed at a decent hour so I'm not dragging.
The chewable iron pills seem to be helping me a little. I also made sure to eat bananas last week to boost my postassium. I'll continue to take all my vitamins and follow directions as I want my next blood work to come back perfect.
I started taking Biotin for my hair loss and also using Nioxin shampoo and conditioner. I know this is only temporary so I'm staying as positve as possible.

16 Weeks Post-Op

Aug 20, 2007

I weighed 165lbs this morning. Total weight loss of 55lbs. I'm a bit worried right now as I'm waiting for the results for further blood tests that were taken on Friday. For some reason my doctor wanted to test me for lupus, leukemia, mono and various other SCARY diseases. My B12 levels were fine but I am now slightly anemic. I've started taking chewable iron and B1 vitamins in hopes of nipping this in the bud. I finally got to see a nutritionist and really liked her a lot. Thank goodness I have medical insurance coverage outside of the military because I haven't been very impressed with Balboa's aftercare. It is virtually nonexistent. Keep your fingers crossed that I'm healthy and my blood tests come back fine! I uploaded some pictures from this weekend.

15 Weeks Post-Op!

Aug 14, 2007

I weighed yesterday morning and was 167.5lbs. That is a total loss of 52.5lbs in 15 weeks. I have been doing well and have been able to eat grapes, raisins and even had some Chinese food for lunch last Friday. I ordered the steamed vegetables with chicken. Haven't had any real issues with anything except some cheese. If I eat a mozzarella stick my stomach really hurts or if I eat a slice of muenster. Yet I can have Laughing Cow wedges without a problem as well as melted cheese. Bizarre. I've been struggling with my energy levels and I'm curious to see if my B12 levels are low. I should be hearing back from my surgeon's office regarding my blood tests. For some reason the vitamin results take two weeks. Other than that just looking forward to my trip home to Virginia over Labor Day weekend. I'm supposed to see my ex-boyfriend which will be interesting. I'll let you know how it goes!

14 Weeks Post-Op

Aug 06, 2007

This morning I weighed 169lbs! I have lost 51lbs since the day of surgery. I'm now wearing size 10s and this weekend I bought medium shirts at several places. I had to get a new pair of running shoes and my shoe size went down to a 9.5 when I used to be a 10. All in all very exciting.
I drank two glasses of wine on Friday night and a glass of wine on Saturday night. I was nervous that the alcohol would have slowed my weight loss this week but I still lost 3lbs. I do not want to make having wine a habit though.
I bought a ticket to fly home to Virginia for Labor Day weekend. I'm using that as a goal to get me through my workouts this month. This morning I went to my first "Boot Camp" class at my local gym. The class is held on the elliptical machines and also involves step work, lifting and strengthening moves. It is at 5:45am. It was difficult getting up this morning but I'm so happy that my workout for the day is already done. I bought a six week pass for $149 which will make me go. So that is about it.

P.S. I got the ring that I wanted (it's the one on my page).

13 Weeks Post- Op/Three Month Post-Op Appointment

Jul 31, 2007

Well I just got back from my surgeon's office. Had a full blood panel done early this morning and my cholestoral was 179. When my blood was taken back in April my cholestoral was 259. That is a 70 point drop in three months. I was relieved. The rest of my bloodwork looked good but I was a little low in potassium. Looks like bananas will be on the breakfast menu more often.
I now weigh 172lbs which means I've lost a total of 48lbs. My surgeon said she would like to see me reach 140lbs but I'm aiming for 130lbs.
I went running last night for the first time with my sister. It was difficult but I was able to run about a mile. We walked the rest.
After work yesterday we ran to the mall so I could get some new work clothes and believe it or not I'm a size 10. Just doesn't seem possible but it's true! I'd like to be at my goal weight by Christmas. I know that is aiming very high but at least it will keep me motivated and moving closer to acheiving my goal.
My favorite foods right now are greek style 0% fat yogurt (Fage) with Splenda and strawberries or blueberries for breakfasts, wheat thins with Laughing Cow Light and fat-free deli turkey for lunch and chicken for dinner. I'm still drinking one new whey protein bullet a day (half in the morning/half at night) and have been much better about upping my fluid intake. I really do believe that hydration and protein consumption are the key to success with this surgery.
That is all for now! Hope everyone is well.
:) Courtney
