"I'm just answering the questions that Obesity Help asks.rnrnWhat was my first impression?rnrnDr. Powell is a wonderful gifted surgeon.rnrnHow did my impression change over time?rnrnMy husband and I have become very displeased with him. To my knowledge I am no longer his patient. I've never received my \"official discharge\" from his practice yet.rnrnHow would I describe his staff?rnrnHis sister is the office manager the office has no communication. Pretty much if you have a problem they tell you \"to go to the emergency room\" if he isn't on call and refuse to call him and they do not have a backup \"oncall\" doctor. rnrnWhat did I like least about him?rnrnHe is not open to criticism. I gave him constructive criticism about my concerns with the way his office provides care and was released from his care.rnrnHow much does his office emphasize aftercare? rnrnThere is NO aftercare. His office does not currently even have a nurse. I began having problems post-op and was told if the surgery center found a problem that they would have contacted him after I was told at the surgery center that I had a \"mass\" in my stomach.rnrnDoes he have a structured aftercare program?rnrnNo, pretty much if you need a fill/adjustment you have to call his office and get his \"permission\" to have it done, otherwise the surgery center won't touch you.rnrnHow well did he address the risks of the surgery?rnrnThe iniitial surgery was explained to us pretty well. I began having pain and discomfort approximately 1 year out from my first surgery. Dr. Powell and his office manager/sister told me I would have my port moved under local anesthesia. Two days before this surgery I was told by the receptionist that Dr. Powell wanted to do exploritory surgery under general anesthesia and it would be more invasive than my banding surgery. I work full time and have a 2 year old, I can't have major surgery with only two days notice.rnrnHow would I rate him overall?rnrnI am overall happy with my weight loss, but disapointed in the way he ended up being.rnrnWhich is better, surgical competence, bedside manner, or are both good?rnrnWhen you have weight loss surgery you are signing up as part of a team. Especially Lap Band surgery due to the aftercare involved. rnrnDr. Powell no longer accepts my insurance (BCBS) as in network. His office staff never informed me until I had an office visit when I was having post-surgical complications that he was out of network. I am no longer under the care of any weight loss surgeon. Once one surgeon touches you another surgeon won't due to liability issues. rnrnDr. Powell did surgery on both my husband and me. I have epigastric and port pain and he has lost 20lbs in the past year. Since we became a thorn in his side we are no longer considered his patients and thus are not eligible for adjustments or aftercare at this point."
