I did not write this myself, but I agree with every word!

THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!!!

By: Leilani

[Original draft written June 2004 - - Revised: April 2006]

Success comes with a backbone, NOT a wishbone!

First and foremost, you have to keep it POSITIVE. As with everything in life, if you think you can't - you WON'T! Simple enough?

I have to wonder when "we" (as adults) finally take ownership for our actions, our life and our health? We have been given a gift, a second chance to actually LIVE life again instead of merely existing on the sidelines. It's up to each of us to do that as healthy and productively as possible.

We're ALL statistics waiting to happen and the insurance companies are chomping at the bit. The bean counters are eager to drop Weight Loss Surgery ("WLS") from the policies; some already have. Don't you know that any negative feedback thrown into the mix only strengthens their cause? I may not be able to control every thing that happens to my body after WLS, but most things I can. I CHOOSE to take control and I will be a positive statistic when the numbers get counted.

We live in a spoiled society, expecting everything in life to come with a bunch of really cool choices. Well, guess what? When it comes to your health, you're not always going to get a choice. You either DO IT and stay healthy, or you DON'T and your body pays the price.

The way I saw it, I had a 90 day healing and adjusting period after surgery. My 'super morbidly obese' body had more than enough stores to survive the learning curve. In turn, it gave me plenty of time to heal, adjust and learn. For those of you OVER 90 days Post-Op, the probation period is over - its time to get serious and LIVE what you've learned.

* You say you can't get in enough liquids throughout the day, don't like the taste of water, or just keep forgetting? --TOUGH! It's not an option anymore. Find a way to do it, get suggestions and tips from others in support groups, message boards, etc. Read, learn and JUST DO IT!! Why do you think there is a choice here?

* You say you don't like the big horse pill type vitamins, or the tart chalky chewables? ... it's just too many to bother with? Or maybe you just can't remember to take them? -- TOUGH! You gave up the option NOT to take vitamins when you agreed to have your insides rerouted. FIND a way to get them in; crushed, minced, chopped, liquified, in a shake, etc. No exceptions, your health depends on it.

* Protein is a must. So you can't get it all in via foods and you don't like the way the shakes taste? -- TOUGH! Either get it through your meals (and there are a gazillion food choices out there) or supplement it with protein shakes and bars.

Trust me, I don't drink my protein shake every morning because I think it tastes like a chocolate blizzard from Dairy Queen. I've tried many varieties over the last 2 years. I'd even venture to say 25 of the top sellers/flavors have crossed my lips. For the record? I've yet to find one that is as 'delicious' as boasted by the distributor. So what. I still drink one every morning. My HEALTH dictates that I need "X" grams of protein per day. If I'm not getting enough from my meals then I supplement a shake. 'Nuff said.

This surgery is a gift, I owe it to me and everyone else fighting the approval process, to do it right! I will continue to choke down my vitamins, my water and my protein every single day, for the REST OF MY LIFE. Some days will be easier than others, regardless, no days will be missed.

It's all about discipline. Create a routine, set a timer, develop a pattern, tie a string around your finger, glue a note on your forehead, whatever it takes.

You're an adult - take responsibility! If this surgery doesn't slap a back bone into you, not much will.

It's only a tool......

Dec 26, 2011

 IT'S JUST A TOOL!!!
The way I describe RNY is that it is a tool. You can own a hammer (the tool), but the hammer won't build you a house. You have to use the hammer and put in a lot of work to build the house (losing the weight). THEN, as all you homeowners know, you have to maintain that house. It is a lifetime of maintenance. If you let something go for too long, it is a bigger job to fix later. You have to pay the mortgage (eat right), pay the taxes (take your vitamins), mow the lawn (exercise) and all of the other responsibilities of home ownership. You have to take care of the tool.....

March Madness (WLS Style)

Mar 26, 2009

March has been a wild and wonderful month for me. Besides traveling to South Africa and going on a girls cruise, it has been a lot of WLS WOW's!!

MARCH HAPPENINGS:
Tomorrow is my 5 month surgerversary.
I hit a normal BMI.
I lost 102 pounds since starting this process.
I am within 3 pounds of my original goal (I may lose another 5 lbs)
AND.......Today I bought size 6 Levis AND THEY FIT!!!!!

I am so thankful that I decided to have the RNY.

For any of you newbies, the best is yet to come!! I never thought that I could accomplish what I have, especially in such a short amount of time.

Thank you to all of you. You have all been such a great support system to me.

8 weeks out tomorrow :)

Dec 21, 2008

I just can't keep the smile off my face! I feel great and am happy with my weight loss. 70 pounds total and 65 since my first clinic weigh in 4 months ago! I still have another 40 to lose and know now that I can do it.

I have been very fortunate to have had no complications and am eating without any problems. I still am only able to eat my protein with no room for much else. I get my 75-85 grams of protein daily, drink about 75-85 ounces and bike 7 miles 5-6 days a week.

My post surgical weight loss has averaged 3 pounds a week, and that is fine with me.

3 1/2 weeks out

Nov 20, 2008

I have to say that my surgery and recovery were SO much easier than I could have ever imagined! I had sore abdominal muscles for 4 or 5 days, but no pain at all (and I am a sissy). In the first 10 days after surgery I lost the extra hospital weight and another 11 pounds, and since then NOTHING .

I know that I will lose lots more and that it may be slow. I don't have a good patients gene. I want it NOW :)

The day before surgery :)

Oct 25, 2008

This may seem a little strange, but, I am so excited to have surgery tomorrow!

This journey has been very educational, exciting and has made me feel like I can really make it. My outside will finally match the way I feel on the inside. I will feel better physically and look better too. I think that because I have been so happy and excited about the surgery that my youngest kids (15 & 12) are very calm as well.

It has been wonderful to have lost 40 pounds since my first nurse visit in August. I did lose 5 pounds before that visit, so I have lost 45 so far. I do weigh myself every day, but don't stress over what my scales say. I only go by my Doctors office weigh in numbers. I figure my WalMart home scale is just a check in. I know that I won't lose every day or week. And I also know that if there is an increase that it isn't real with what I am eating.

I do wonder where I will be in January when we go to Disney World, in February when a large banquet that I am coordinating is held and in March when I go on my annual 'girls' cruise. We'll see........

First Visit

Aug 19, 2008

I made my first appointment with my PCP in December of 2007 to discuss WLS. My appointment date was supposed to be Jan 10th. Unfortunately, on Janurary 8th, my Mother passed away VERY unexpectdly. I had to take a step back, I had been her primary care taker for her last 15 months. I think that I remember most from that blur of days is that my eldest daughter said that she never wanted to lose me, that what was hit her (and me) the most. She has been my best friend for years. She is 26 now and is my best friend and biggest supporter in this WLS path.

Today I had my first nurse appointment and WILL make it to a healthier and happier future!  I will keep you (and myself) posted on this blog of my progress.

* When the word lap has nothing to do with a strip club.
* Other women are calling you names behind your back.
* When you are glared at in the plus size department because you don't "belong there".
* When you really don't have a thing to wear.
* You have to prove you are the person on the driver's license.
* You start being in the pictures, not behind the camera.
* You want to hug everyone fat and hand them your surgeon's card.
* You are never parted from a bottle of water.
* When you order a doggy bag at the same time as your meal.
* Being too small for your britches.
* When the only way your nipples are where they belong is to roll them up, position them with your bra and secure with a ponytail holder.
* When you go to the mall and take the first available space instead of circling 20 minutes for one closer to the door.
* You truly are a "cheap date".
* When one drink makes you flipping floozy!
* When you run to the door and don't hear a flapping sound.
* You flip your shirt to show complete strangers your scar.
* Vitamins feel like a meal.
* You go from a 56DDDD to 32AAA in a year and didn't have a breast reduction.
* You've just lost 100 lbs and run into a high school friend who asks "did you change your hair?"
* You can cross your legs... both of them!
* Instead of a Wonder Bra you need a Wonder Where They Went Bra.
* When your obsession from food turns to your scale.
* They no longer call 911 for the Jaws of life to extricate you from a turnstile.
* No more Velcro shoes.
* When your Stairmaster is no longer used for drying your fine washables.
* your mother says "You don't eat enough."
* When your doctor looks you in the eye and says "I know you will have success with this."
* Having sex your husband complains that your hip bones are poking him.
* You can wear corduroy pants without igniting a fire.
* When you wave and your upper arms wave back.
* You safety pin your underwear.
* Someone phones and thinks your husband is sneaking around with some skinny mistress.
* Cannot blame the cat/dog for shedding.
* Cancel your Lane Bryant Credit Card.
* 3 Lean Cuisines a week and that's your total grocery purchase.
* The kids wonder what happened to the cake and cookie god...did he die???
* Having to constantly BLAME the dog for your gas!
