Follow ups completed

Sep 21, 2007

Well I went yesterday for my followups with the dietician and the physical therapist.  I got my official weigh in... so I found out my scale at home understates my weight by 3 lbs.  I weighed myself yesterday morning and it was 375... I ate a yogurt and drank some crystal light (not 3lbs)... when I weighed myself at Legacy... 378.  I still hit my goal as far as they were concerned.  The dietician said she doesn't need any further follow-ups but she wanted me to start incorporating more fiber-rich foods into my diet.  The physical therapist was happy to see me exercising and I met her goals so she approved me to move on.  One thing she asked is wether or not i've thought about not going through the surgery.  I have thought about it... alot.  I just don't trust myself that I can lose the weight on my own with a full-size stomach.  Of all the diets i've tried and failed... I just can't see any other way around it, than doing surgery.  Legacy called today and they need an addendum to my chart regarding the medication I'm taking.  Sucks because she's out until Oct 3rd... more waiting...

Weigh in

Sep 07, 2007

This morning... #376.  24lbs lost since 8/8/07 - 30 days.  I played a round of golf yesterday... haven't played in awhile, was so sore all over when i got home and when i got up, i was real tight in my low back and legs.  But, once I took a hot shower, got the blood flowing, felt better.  14 more days till followups, looking forward to it.

Woot! At pre-op loss goal less 1lb

Aug 30, 2007

Weighed in this morning... 379!  Dietician wanted me to be at 380 by Sept 20th... and it's not even September yet.

Spoke to dietician

Aug 28, 2007

Down 2 more pounds... #382... Called my dietician Dana today.  I asked her if I should continue to lose weight before surgery since i'm 2 pounds from my 20lb loss requirement.  She said I can continue to lose weight before surgery without any problems.  I told her I'm trying to keep in my 100g of carbs and around 2000 total calories.  I asked her about what's next after I meet her and physical therapist on the 20th.  She said if both of us feel you've met the requirements and are doing what is neccesary, my chart should be forwarded to the surgeons office for a consult.  Can't wait...

Weigh in

Aug 24, 2007

Woohoo... so I bought a new scale for the bathroom... finally came in today from amazon.com... that can handle big fatties like me.  It had been since 8/14 since my last weigh in of 394 and 400 on 8/8.  So, I weighed in today... 10 days later.  384!  That's 16 pounds in 16 days since I started my pre-op diet.

Sleep study finished

Aug 23, 2007

It was the most horrible experience of my life I think.  They took about an hour attaching all the electrodes to me.  Then I took some ambien at 10pm and I out by 10:30.  They woke me up about 2pm and told me they found apnea events and had to put the CPAP on me for the rest of the night.  They gave me a mask with just the nose part which required me to keep my mouth shut.  I kept waking gasping for air.  So, I called the nurse and she replaced it with a full face mask.  It fit better but still I couldn't deal with the thing being on my face.  It dried my throat.  But, with the humidifer on, it was like breathing in hot humid air (like living in texas or missouri).  Needless to say I got maybe 3 hours of sleep that night.  They woke me at 6am and sent me home.  I got home and slept until 1pm.  I'm never doing one of those again.   But, atleast I had it done for the requirements for surgery.

More appointments tomorrow

Aug 21, 2007

Busy day tomorrow.  I have to see my PCP to discuss getting some medication from the advice of the psychologist from OWLS.  Later in the evening, I will be meeting with the trainer at the gym I recently joined to go over a fitness regime pre and post-op.  Lastly, I have my sleep study that evening.   So far I haven't seen a bill from anyone.  But I have good medical insurance so hopefully they're flipping the bill for most things.

I also bought a bathroom scale from amazon.com, should be here in a couple days that'll measure big guys like me.  I need to find out if I've lost anymore weight since my pre-op diet started.

Sleep study scheduled

Aug 16, 2007

I got a call today from the Meridian Park Hospital sleep lab for my sleep study appointment.  I got scheduled for August 22nd.  I will be sent a letter in the mail explaining what I need to do prior and what to bring with me.  Glad I finally got called, I had made calls about the study several times but no referral.  Sounds like things are moving along.

I went to a local gym yesterday and signed up.  It's a small facility but its open 24hrs and they have brand new equipment.  Amazingly enough, I scheduled my workout consult with the trainer there on the same day as my sleep study but I can do both the same day.

2nd pre-op appointments completed

Aug 14, 2007

Well, I just got back from my 2nd set of pre-op appointments with the psychologist, physician, dietician, and physical therapist.  My psych test indicated i have issued with depression and anxiety... duh.  So, I've been referred to my PCP to get on some anti-depressant meds.  All my blood work looked good except my vitamin D, folate and my LDL cholesterol.  My vitamin D was way low, which prevents the absorbtion of calcium, so they gave me a perscription for that and told me to get more sun.  Folate was low but said a multi-vitamin will help with that.  Lastly, my LDL could be controlled with more exercise and decreasing the foods that I have been eating that were high in saturated fat... duh.  The dietician went over the foods I should be eating now and the foods i'll be eating post-op.  I went over the diet I've been on since Wednesday and she told me that I need to increase my carbs because she said a ketosis diet (atkins) is good for losing weight quickly but it can harm you in the long run without keeping a level amount of both proteins and carbs... and she said regardless of all of that... a calorie is a calorie... and the less you ingest, the more weight you lose.  But if you restrict yourself too much, you'll have issue... it's about finding a balance.  She said that based on my current weight/height and the amount of physical activity i'm currently doing (which is basically none), that a 2000-2500 cal diet should make me lose weight but it will happen slowly.  If I start exercising, I can go up to 2500 cals/day.  We did talk about the foods post-op and said I should start experimenting with different protein powders to find out which one I can handle and to not use it now because I may get sick of it.

My next appointments are on Sept 20th for my followups with the dietician and my physical therapist.  Another month to wait... grrr.  I still haven't been referred for my sleep study.

First appointment completed

Aug 08, 2007

I went in today to have my first set of steps completed... I did my bloodwork, body measurements, photos taken, EKG, muscle/fat mass test (not sure what those are called) and my weight taken.  Since I don't have a scale that measures anything higher than 300... I haven't weighed myself up until today since about 9 months ago when I saw a doctor about some sleeping pills.  At that time I weighed 345.  Today, I weighed 400.9... I can't believe it... four hundred freakin pounds... that's more than the normal wait of 2 men.  I didn't think i've gained that much since my pants haven't gotten any bigger, my shirts are still the same size, where could 55 pounds of weight add to?  So, now my BMI is 57.4 instead of 49.1.  @#$$#%^
