Rewind to Surgery Day (very detailed)
Jul 25, 2007
I arrived at the hospital at 6:45 a.m. Upon my arrival, I checked in at the Admissions desk, and was asked to be seated until they called my name. I had butterflies in my tummy.......I was extremely nervous, but I knew that the good Lord didn't bring me this far to leave me. I was asked to enter the pre-surgery area. There I was weighed, given IV fluids and antibiotics, and a shot in my stomach to prevent blood clots. About 30 minutes later, I was given some "get crunk" medicine. I really enjoyed it because I started singing every song that came to my mind. I even surprised my husband because he started laughing hysterically. Well, after my performance, I kissed Will goodbye, and was wheeled into the operating room. There were a lot of people there, and all sorts of bright lights and equipment. I was asked to climb onto the operating table, told to take three deep breaths, and was off to lala land. When I woke up, I felt like an 18-wheeler had run over my stomach. I managed to find the strength to mumble. "my stomach hurts." Then I fell back to sleep, woke up, and mumbled the same thing. I didn't understand why they would not give me anything for pain. The nurse explained that they have to wait until the anesthesia wore off first before they could give me any medicine. They eventually gave me something, and I was rolled to my hospital room. My mom and hubby were waiting for me there with balloon, flowers, and smiles. I was still very groggy so I mostly slept the first couple of hours until the woke me up to go walking. The first time I sat up, I was very nauseous, but was given something for it. I walked down 4 hospital room doors, then turned around and came back. My legs felts like jello. All of the gas they inflated me with was in my back, so that pain made walking difficult also. My hubby was right there by my side giving me a back massage while I walked. That helped a lot, and the instant hot packs I was given helped too. The second day, I had to take an X-ray to see if my stomach had any leaks. I was told to drink barium. Everyone told me it tastes awful, but I thought of it as my apple juice, and swallowed it quickly so I could return to my room. The dr. said there were not any leaks! Praise Him! I was wheeled back to my room and given my first popsicle. The third day the doc came to remove my drain from my tummy. He said it would feel weird like a lizard running out of me, and it did. I was in a little pain after that, but glad to know that I would be able to go home soon. I received a few last minute medicines, and discharge papers, then returned home.
