Home after surgery

Apr 02, 2008

My surgery went well.  Dr. Schumacher said it was a tough surgery.  I am on the very outside edge of his limits of doing a lap-band.  He would certainly have suggested that I have RNY.  One of the things that I like about him was that he listened to my concerns over the RNY and didn't dismiss them.  We have a conversation about them, he decided he could do the lap-band on me and we went forward with it.  The reason it was a tough surgery he said is because my liver was very large and that I have a lot of fat tangled with my organs.

Knowing this information has been a motivator to me to use my new tool and drop all this weight.  It was well on its way to killing me.  Not tomorrow or the next day but it wasn't going to be long before my health was going to seriously decline.

The day of surgery wasn't awful.  Most of the pain came from gas but even that was more uncomfortable than painful.  I know I am fortunate.  Other's I talked to at the hospital were having a worse time, but still not terrible.

The day after surgery the gas was finding its way out and that made a huge improvement.  I kept pain medicine flowing so that pain never got bad.  I've been through a surgery on my wife where the hospital allowed her pain to get beyond where it should be and it was bad to get it back under control.

First night in my own bed was pretty good.  I was able to sleep on my side without dealing with IV's and hospital gowns so that was good.  Woke up with some pain, some discomfort but alot of that more soreness rather than stabbing kind of pain.

Working today on walking, moving, resting and trying to get the protein with the full liquid diet.  Sipping my Slimfast (it tastes much better now that I haven't had real food in a few days!).

I'm very excited to progress with this and drop this weight.
