I'm Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!

Quick Update:
My trip to Texas was a blast! I was so excited to see my mom. I am definitely a Mama's girl! My flight both ways went without any problems (Cancellations, over bookings, etc) . And I have to tell yall how much more relaxing and stress-free flying is now that I am 100lbs lighter. The main perk was... drum roll please... NO SEATBELT EXTENSION! Word! The coach seats are still a tight fit, but nothing like before. It was kinda a trip because in the back of my mind I was still kinda expecting the flight attendant to offer me the seat belt extender when I was boarding the plane. LOL When they(flight crew) greeted me while I was boarding I was sure the question would be coming in any minute, so when they left me go on pass w/o offering I started thinking... "Damn didn't they "SEE" me?  It proved that I still do not truly have a grasp on what I actually look like to other folks. Maybe my head will eventually catch up with my shrinking body. .
Thanks for all of the email messages that you all sent. I was not iggin yall...LOL... So, I will start answering ASAP.

Love Yall!

"Attention Airport personnel, WE NEED SECURITY"

Apr 11, 2008

I am taking a flight out to Texas tomorrow morning (TO SEE MY MAMA ß YAAAAYYY!). So yall pray for me that I won’t have to hurt nobody because my flight has been cancelled. LOL. I’m scheduled to go on American Airlines, who has been cancelling flights left and right (I bought my ticket over a month ago). The last report I saw on the news said that over 2,500 flights have been cancelled since this madness began. What’s really going on??? I really really really don’t want to get arrested at the airport BUT I am going to act a plum fool if my flight is cancelled and they give me a hard time about making some alternative accommodations for me. Pray yall…

I got on the scale this morning and it read 288.?.  I honestly don’t remember what was after the decimal point. LOL I was so excited to see the 288 that I hopped off the scale super fast cause I did not want to give it time to change it’s mind! Hee hee hee. So, I have officially joined the Century Club today! Wow I’m still in shock. I don’t even want to update my tickers etc because I don’t want to jinx it. I KNOW… my ass is crazy!

A BLAST FROM THE PAST!!!

Apr 01, 2008

I was cleaning out old stuff from my work emails and come across this exchange between me and one of my girls. It is a testament to just how far I’ve come in less than a year’s time. Even though I would be considered a slooooow loser since surgery (compared to most of the post-ops I’ve seen here on OH), this email reminded me of how hopeless/helpless that I felt at one time and those feelings have been replaced by the realization of potentials and possibilities. At the time of these emails I was about 2 months into the Options program at Kaiser and about 5 ½ months away from having surgery and well over 360 lbs. I had no clue back then that I would be physically able to go to the gym 5 days/week (doing up to 50 mins of Cardio AND an hour+ of the weight machines with NO problems); and that I would be able to walk around at an open air market ALL DAY LONG without my feet/back/ankles hurting AFTER going to the gym that same morning. What? Me? Doing 2 things in one day?? LOL. Last June you could not have convinced me that this would happen for me. I was so tired and beat down by all of the extra weight that I was carrying around on my 5’ 5” frame, and from the debilitating effects of having Diabetes and Edema. So, my point is this… DO NOT GIVE UP! It WILL get better! Claim it! And one day tell your story to others (never know whose life you may impact!)

(Remember to read the one on the bottom 1st) *I’ve edited/omitted the names to respect the privacy of others* The person who wrote this to me knows who she is and I TRULY thank her for encouraging and believing in me (when I did not even believe).
So, now on to the email...

U know when you take the weight off I believe u will feel a difference. Remember Shaana you are waking your body up & moving bones & muscles around that you haven’t done in a while. With any new form of exercising especially walking you are very sore. Shaana I can remember when I first started walking to the train station OMG I was so embarrassed because literally I was out of breath & when it was time to get off the train that was hard because my calves & thighs hurt so bad, I remember when it was hot days out & I would walk my legs would literally be burning. Especially in the inside of my thighs rubbing together, but with time (a long time) the pain eased up some. When I walk with ******* & ***** I be so out of breath Shaana cause they move FAST that’s why I was so excited when you say you walking with us because I know we will walk at our own pace & we wouldn’t be so sore after the walk.
Just continue to walk the pain will ease I promise you & no having this pain is not as good as it gets, it get better for you with a lot of time & patience. Just think how it was before you started walking, it was hard for you to get up & go to the restroom. I know it’s a bit easier now.  Remember everything is BABY steps & the body is like DAMN what is she doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know what I wonder??? Even though my back and ankles don’t hurt like they used to… will there ever be a time when I don’t feel any pain when I walk? It’s crazy, but I don’t even remember what that feels like. I can’t imagine it at this point. It’s such a simple thing to do!!! BUT the pain is STILL there, just way more bearable. I get a little scared when I think about if maybe this is as good as it’s going to get in regards to the pain L

I Have My 3 Mo Post-op F/u Visit with Dr. Tanaka Today...

Mar 13, 2008

Wish me luck! He always makes me sooo nervous

A Question was asked about getting in all your protein ...

Mar 10, 2008

Here's 2 of the sources that I currently use:

1. New Whey Liquid Protein by IDS- It's 42 grams of protein and only 3.1 oz-176 calories
Taste: 5 out of 10 (I think the Grape and Orange flavors taste best- I don't like the Blue Raspberry or Fruit Punch)
                     or
2. ProComplex Augmented Protein System- It's 60 grams of protein for 2 scoops. You can mix it with as little as 8 oz of water- 260/270 calories **This is the one that my Surgeon recommends**
Taste: 9 out of 10 (I drink the Strawberry Swirl and Rich Chocolate Milk flavors)

*Both of the above can be purchased at The Vitamin Shoppe

NOTE: A person's body can only absorb so much protein at one time BUT (per my surgeon) it is okay to take more than you need at one time. A surplus of protein is better than not getting enough.

In Case I Missed Anyone w/My Email I sent earlier this week ...

Hello OH Family!
Just a quick status update: I am now 3 months post-op (as of 02/26/08) and I am feeling better than I have felt in YEARS.
I started this journey at 388 lbs, and have lost a total of 89
lbs overall (40 pre-surgery and 49 since surgery).  I realize and appreciate though that having a support system like OH has kept me motivated and focused (especially when I was having pity parties for myself cause I did not feel like I was losing fast enough, or when I just needed to vent). Thank you guys for the words of encouragement and for providing the shoulders to cry on; but also for keeping it real with me and FIRMLY telling me to get and stay on the ball and stop trippin ! I appreciate it all.
