My Surgery
Apr 22, 2007
Hi all,
I had my surgery on April 18,2007. I was extremely anxious when I went in. I had never had anesthesia before, and I was very concerned about the pain. My husband admits now that he thought I was going to back out. Thank goodness I didn't.
The day after surgery, after a rough night (I was in such a fog from my pain meds), I was fed my first "breakfast", which consisted of three little pill holders full of broth, crystal light, and a cube of sugar free jello. My IV had been removed, and I was started on liquid Lortab. I had walked a few times, every few hours, but I was still in a fog. I'm not used to taking medication.
Around noon, I told my husband that I felt very nauseus. I felt that if I got up and walked it might feel better. On the way back, I ended up in the bathroom throwing up. Ouch! I asked the nurses for some anti-nausea medicine, which helped almost immediately. I was then able to eat my lunch, which was a soft bariatric diet. I felt good physically, except I was still in a fog. I could not keep my eyes open.
Around 4:00, the nursing staff said I was OK to go home. What a mistake that was! As soon as I got into the car, I became nauseus again. By the time I got home, I felt awful! I tried eating some cottage cheese and yogurt (a very small amount), and immediately began throwing up. I cannot tell you how many times I threw up, I just knew I was VERY sick. I called the doctor, and he prescribed some anti-nausea medication, but I ended up driving back to the hospital, being admitted again, and feeling like I had just made the worst decision of my life.
Of course, being the drama queen that I am, I was sure that something went wrong. I would be the statistic that would never recover. Whatever. I was allergic to Lortab - who knew? As soon as I stopped the Lortab, I felt great. I was dehydrated though, and the IV's did me a world of good. I stopped taking pain meds all together, and the pain wasn't really bad. I was surprised! I just felt a little sore. Anyway, that was 3 days ago, and every day I'm feeling stronger and healthier. I'm finally on my way to great health!
