Nutrition Class

May 05, 2009

May 4th, 2009,

Had my nutrition class (a requirement of Dr. Oh's) this morning from 9:00am to 12:30am at St. Francis outpatient conference room.  The class was very thorough and enjoyable.  I thought I pretty much new it all, but I didn't.  Learned that I'm going to have to have some med changes.  After surgery I won't be able to take any kind of extended release medications and also that I will have to be able to crush all my meds to powder form or get them in liquid form.  Also learned that gel-caps just plain won't work.  Also learned the importance of getting a med alert bracelet - if don't have one - in an emergency if they had to shove a tube down my throat into my stomach they could shove the tube right through my tiny little pouch - ykes that wouldn't be good!  Other people at the class got approved really fast for their surgery - no insurance problems or 6 mo. or more dieting for them.  Before, I would have thought that was great.  However, knowing what I know now I feel that's just too fast and most these people knew VERY LITTLE about the surgery and just were not mentally or physically prepared.  FOR THIS TYPE OF SURGERY I FEEL YOU HAD BETTER BE PREPARED BECAUSE IT IS SUCH A BIG LIFE TIME CHANGE!  And I haven't even had my surgery yet.  Most of these people knew very little about how this surgery will impact your body, didn't know about all the proteins and vitamin/mineral supplements you must take for life to stay healthy and they didn't even know about support groups.  I'M ACTUALLY THANKFUL I've had the extra six months to further prepare, read WLS books, make friends, attend support group meetings, find my supplier for WLS proteins and supplements - I feel so much more confident and prepared!  But yes, I will also be the first to admit that I'm still scared about the whole ordeal because it is such a big life time change.  I think I'm almost more worried about the "mental" changes I will be going through, than the physical changes.  This is a big, big step to take in life and definitely not one to be taken lightly.
