I started this journey weighing 296 with total knee replacements for both knees in 1999 because of degenerative arthritis so my orthopedic specialist wanted me to lose weight. I was afraid of the surgery so I watched several people who had had the Roux-en-Y surgery some by the same doctor at the Barix center and some that had went different places. I found the ones that had gone to Columbus to the Barix center had gotten along really good and was losing the weight and looked good. So at a size 24 women clothing at 5'2" weighing 296 I scheduled my consultation. This was a huge step for me. I was so nervous that my blood pressure was higher than it had ever been in my life. The staff and doctor were very nice and later took my pressure again after I had talked with them for a while and it began to come down. They took care of the insurance and then scheduled my surgery. Weighing 296#'s I tried to lose before I weighed in for surgery and did manage to drop to 286 by the afternoon of my surgery. On Friday afternoon, April 11, 2003 I had my Roux-en-Y surgery and got along really well. I left the Barix hospital by 12 on Monday to go home. I tried to follow everything I was suppose to and started my walking. I went back to work after 3 weeks and was getting along really good and dropping the pounds! After just a couple of weeks I was off of my cholestrol meds and have never had to go back on them!! I feel great and have had so much energy to play with my grandchildren and enjoy them so much more than with my weight I had on. I have held the same weight for the past 2 1/2 years at 162-165 and now wear a size 8 & 10 petites in clothing. Boy what a difference this has made in my life and my families life. I wish I had been able to have the surgery sooner.
