Got my insurance requirements

Apr 04, 2008

I received my insurance requirements today and am going to start making sure I can meet all of them.  I am a bit nervous about one - the one that requires documentation of 6 months of failure of a specific kind of weight loss attempt.  I have a doctors appointment next week and will ask about it.  I have to put together of all my previous attempts, so I think I will take that with me.

It's another step completed!

- History and physical including height, weight with co-morbidities
- Initial Evaluation
- Documented 5 years history of Morbid Obesity
-
Documented failure of 6 months of medically supervised non-surgical methods of weight reduction by either MD, OD, Nurse Practitioner which includes nutrition therapy, behavior modifying exercise or increase in activity, medication therapy or maintenance therapy.
- Psychological evaluations
- Documentation of willingness to comply with pre-operative and post-operative treatment plans
- Documentation of procedures to be performed along with codes
- Is procedure being done short/long limb and how many centimeters and length.

Getting lots of support

Apr 01, 2008

After my husband was so supportive this weekend when I told him my desire to have surgery, I decided to talk to others and request letters of support from them.  I talked to my best friend and she was incredibly supportive.  Both her parents have had bariatric surgery so she understands what is involved.

I also requested info from my insurance company on what I need to do to qualify and they are sending that along.  I have a PCP appointment next week about some medication, but plan to talk to my doctor about my plans and get my weight history from them.  I am sure that is something they would need.

Everyone's posts here have been so incredible and I have learned so much.  I really value this site.

My journey begins

Mar 31, 2008

This weekend, I began my journey.  I have been thinking of bariatric surgery for many years.  During that time, I was convinced that I could do it on my own, and surgery wasn't necessary.  The more I lost, the more I gained.  Now it's about my health - I want to live and I want to live a life I enjoy.

I told my husband last week about my desire.  I had been unsure about telling him because I knew he wasn't the biggest fan of big surgeries.  I had my tonsils out a few years back after being very sick and he wasn't thrilled about that.  So I was nervous.  When I told him and I told him why, he said that he was 100% supportive and very happy that I was wanting to do something to make my life better.

So, I scheduled us for an info session and called my insurance company to get the info I needed.

I am most interested in the Lap Band.  I found this site over the weekend and have found it extremely valuable.  I shared it with my husband so he could see as well.

My next step is to formulate my personal statement for my application and for my insurance.  I also want to get letters of support from my friends and family and from my therapist.  One program in town requires this, but not the one I am going to.  But I think it's a nice step to the process as well.

Stay tuned!
