Things I learned after having the surgery

Feb 04, 2007

I only had a few hiccups in this process and hopefully this will help other people.

1.  Have a binder when you go home that fits.  Mine was to big and they couldn't find that would fit right and it made wearing it very uncomfortable.

2.  Talk to your Dr. about what to take if you have a lot of diahrea to prevent getting dehydrated.  I called the on call Dr. and he recommended Gatoraide and I knew better than to take that.  I talked to my Dr. the next day and he recommended some suger free drinks.

3.  When you get your prescription for your liquid pain killer fill it at the hospital you had your surgery at.  We tried every pharmacy around  and even another hospital that was close to my house and no one carried it.  We had to drive back to the hospital I had the surgery at and pick it up.

4.  Take a lot of pictures to remember everything by.

5.  Stock up on all of your liquids and get a variety.  I had chicken and beef broth, different flavors of sugar free jello and popsicles.

6.  Sleeping can be tough the first couple of weeks.  It helped me to sleep in a recliner rather than a bed.

7.  Remeber crying is ok.  I found that I cried alot for no reason and my Dr. said that is normal.

I will add more as I go along.

It's been forever since I've made a post.  It's almost 8 weeks since surgery and I'm starting to feel normal again.  I'm still having some pain with my incision, but I'm hoping that will go away soon.  I'm on regular food and I've found that I'm really nervous to try new foods because I don't want to discover something that doesn't work.  I need to work on that this week.  I'm down to 214 from 253 Yahoo!!!  I'm even thinking about dating again.  Keyword is thinking about it.  I'm also thinking of trying a new field of work, Upholstery.  My family has been in this business for years and no one has stepped up to take it over so I'm thinking about doing it.  I previously had been working in the property management field for the past 10 years.

Oh my Gosh it's getting so close I'm freaking out.  I had dinner tonight with my friend Angela so it helped to talk it out.  I'm sure everyone is sick of me talking about it.  I had my Pre-Op Screening yesterday which consisted of blood tests, UA and a Chest X-Ray.  The funniest thing happened at the hospital the guy doing my labs misread Blood Count for something else and thought I had to give a stool sample.  I just looked at him like he was crazy, then the other guy goes oh no it says blood count your lucky.  I then went over and met with Dr. Porter once last time before the big day.  I'm trying to get in all the yummy foods I can't have after the surgery!!!

6 Days until surgery

Dec 05, 2006

I'm getting nervous, scared and excited all at the same time for my surgery.  It's been hard because I've only had a few people support me in this journey.  I know in my heart this is the right thing to do.
