10 days out, starting to feel human again

Nov 18, 2009

So its now 10 days post op. I weighed in at 598 pounds on surgery day and I am already down 40 pounds (of course mostly water weight but still its impressive). I had some serious doubts during the 2nd and 3rd days in the hospital (since it was open i was there for 5 days) and with an 11.5 inch incision with 39 staples, it has been a pretty painful week. I was forced to use a Bi-Pap since my CO2 lvls were too high, probably due to the local anesthesia sticking around in my fat cells and that was annoying since there is no way to talk to people while wearing those masks. But by day 4 I was weening off oxygen and the bipap went down to my cpap and only while sleeping, so life gets slowly better.

But now I am home for 5 days and I am no longer struggling with the pain of getting up and down from bed and around the house. Still sore quite a bit but only when moving around really. The worst parts I would say are 1. not being able to breath too well when i roll on to my side in bed (I end up stuck on my back or sitting up) and 2. having to have help wiping my butt! OMG my poor fiancee! Tho I guess if she didnt run screaming during this then she's a keeper lol

Anyhow this is a crazy experience for me, I never have had any surgery, I have no diabetes, blood pressure is normal to low, cholesterol is normal, just I weigh almost 600 pounds, and the pain of lower back, hips, knees, ankles and feet mixed with a deep need to take my life back and be able to get around a little made me choose to do this now instead of later when I am having more serious health issues.

Ill write more soon, this is a great community ;-)
