The Beginning

Apr 25, 2012

I have been over weight for the last 30 years.  When I was young I was always the biggest guy around.  Built like an offensive lineman, I played football from the fifth grade through colllege.  Being big then was'nt a problem.  I ate what I wanted and how ever much I wanted.  The weight became a problem when I was no longer working out and playing ball like before.  I continued to eat like I was still playing and working out.

I weigh 260 lbs when I stopped playing ball.  I've been as high as 330 and currently i'm at an even 300 lbs.  Most people don't think I look like I weigh 300 lbs.  Truthfully I think I carry my weight fairly well but my body knows differently.   I have most of the co morbidities.  I have sleep apnea, high bp, and last August (2011) I was diagnosed with diabetes type 2.  That was the last straw for me.

I've always been able to lose 40 or 50 lbs at a time.  But it never stays off for long.  Over the last 10 years i've lost over 50 lbs 3 different times.  Two years after losing, it's back and always brings some friends with it!  I have to get a handle on this now.  I'm 48 years old and have 4 children who are 23 yrs, 20 yrs, 16 yrs and 22 months old.  Yep I wrote that right!  My youngest is 23 months old.  Staying on this road that I'm on will almost guarantee that I won't see her graduate high school.

So now I am on a mission!  I have decided that I can do this with the help of bariatric surgery.  I have appointments to attend a seminar on May 2 and an appointment with the surgeon on May 8th.  Insurance will cover the procedure so it should just be a matter of jumping through a few hoops to get the approval.  I'm excited and scared to death at the same time.

I plan to use this blog as a journal for keeping track of my journey.  Hopefully I can help a few people along the way as well.

Stay tuned.  This is going to be one heck of a ride!!
