Brian, I am a type 2 diabetic and was on 2 pills a day. The day after my
weight loss surgery the Doctor took me off of one pill then and I have
continued checking my suger. When it is in the normal range of 90 then I
probably will not have to take the other pill. But, your doctor will be
the one to tell you what to do about the sugar that you need.

Sugar consumption is a no no after wls. You will get sick and dump! You
will be eating very little and your blood sugars will stabilize. Many
people go off all meds. Unfortunately, I did not. I took high doses of 4
meds, now I take lower doses of 3.

The hypoglycemia is probably the worst side effect of this surgrey I can
think of. I started having episodes about 20 months out. After years of
trial & error, most of us long termers have found that peanut butter
with a "cheap" carb, such as white bread or crackers works better
than glucose or any sugars or even PB alone. We all keep those little
packages of them in cars, kitchen, work space... everywhere. When the blood
sugar drops, we've got less than 1 minute and NO brain to work with, so it
has to be AT HAND. And this is one time it's ok to drink with
"food".

i havent had wls yet, i am still waiting approval, but i am a diabetic,, i
have always ate a spoon of peanut butter or cheese crackers to get my sugar
up, if i'm in a bind i will drink half a 12 oz coke,,,,,the reason for this
is - eating anything with a lot of sugar will bring your sugar up quick but
without protien to hold it up your sugar will drop fast again,,

Wierd someone else mentioned peanut butter!! I have to do the same
thing-eat a peanut butter sandwich-and fast! It is a crazy side effect
that didn't happen to me before surgery, but happens to my aunt and she is
diabetic.

Glucose tabs work best for me, and easy to carry with you and in the car.
Peanut Butter and carb is great advice as well. I'm Type 1 diabetic and had
alot of problems with low blood sugar, as most. Good luck with your
upcoming surgery, hopefully you'll reduce your diabetic meds with the
weight loss.

Hi Brian, I am & months post op & i was taking 4 shots of insulin
per day & checking sugars 8 times per day. I stopped taking shots 2
weeks before surgery I went on liquid diet. I still check sugars daily
due to low sugars now & also use PB & J, I buy the small premade
ones in the frozen section and if needed i just pop in the micro for 20-30
seconds. it took me about 8-12 weeks post op to stop the side effects of
high & low sugars. i have been about 90-120 every reading. so
improvements will happen....Just remeber to listen to your body......It is
all trial & error....... but now i can feel when its happening &i
just grab a sandwich.sometime it only takes a few bites. Best of luck &
if ya want to chat any further feel free to . Barbara

Hi, Brian...I never had diabetes but I've developed hypoglycemia a year
afert WLS. I tried peanut butter/crackers but it didn't work. My doctor
and nutirtionist recommended orange juice, which does the trick quickly
with no side effects. I keep small cans at work, in the car, and one in my
purse.
