Question:
How much can you eat

I was wondering how much you can eat at a time after the first year could you please give me an example of what you would order if you went to dinner with friends and how much of it would you eat (Chevy's, Chill's, Applebee's these are some of the places in my town) just really curious about this and how you deal with stuff like this on the long term do we need to explain to people for the rest of our lifes about the surgery I am telling family and current friend but will be I meet later wonder about eating habits and I will always have to explain?    — kathy B. 8 yrs. Applebees. Riblet basket & fried baby reds. Most of the baby reds, one strip of ribs (short one). Or most of the Chicken Oriental Salad, half size. McDonald's Happy CB. Part of the burger, part of the fries. If the fries are hot, more of the fries, less of the burger. I meet my main nutritional needs supplementally, so I don't worry as much about looking to food for it. At home, tonight, chicken enchilada, most of a chicken breast, (1/2), about 1/2C salad. I have never HAD to explain, but given half a chance, I am only TOO HAPPY to explain!

2.5 years out here and I cut my meal in half right away. In most restaurants I eat one half of them. If I go to a place like Red Lobster (or a place that gives courses or lots of food) I eat the salad and one cheese bun and take everything else home and have 3 more meals. In the beginning when I ate very little and went out. I would mix the food up mostly and talk too much so nobody really questioned why I wasn't eating. or say I just don't feel hungry, I think I'll take it home.

Whenever I go out to a restaurant, I order something that's easy on carbos and heavy sauces (they don't "sit" very well for me), and eat about of 1/3 of whatever I ordered (protein first, veggies second, carbos last). I take the rest home - makes good lunch the next day, and dinner the day after that. I don't explain the surgery, I just say "gee, I'm full." Most people don't even notice. The thin friends don't think it's remarkable at all - they do the same thing.

Kathy, I live in NYC and we don't have those kinds of resturants. However, I eat out alot b/c that is a way of life in NYC. I am 11wks out today and when i went out last Friday night for Italian, I ordered Gnnocci w/ meat sauce and ate about 1/4 of it and took the rest home. Sometimes, I will just get a buffala mozzarella & tomatos salas w/ balsamic & olive oil and I can eat all of that. When I go out for Mexican, I will get a Chili or Chicken buritto (no rice) and eat a 1/3. When we go out for Indian, I usually get some kufta and some tandori chicken or shrimp and usually again eat 1/3. Good Luck to you.

I am 14 mos out, yesterday consisted of 1 oe egg, 2 pcs bacon for breakfeast, lunch: 1/2 boneless chicken breast, 1/2 order mashed pot., tea. 3pm snack-sliced apple, Super: 1 pork chop(select) boiled cabbage 1/2 cup, Rice w/ tomatoe gravy 1/2 cup. This is a pretty normal day for me.I do not always finish everything, but eat until I am full. My doctor is a firm believer in balanced meals. Most days I eat whatever my family eats, just smaller portions. I have adjusted my cooking to make my meals healthier. I now weigh 145 pounds and have lost 144 pounds. Life is great.

I am only about 3 1/2 months out, but when I go out to dinner (I travel for business on occasion), I either go the appetizer route (I can eat 3-4 shrimp from a shrimp cocktail) or order something healthy from the main menu. I went to Bob Evans last week and got their one-piece grilled chicken breast dinner and had sliced tomatoes with a little bit of Italian dressing on the side. I brought half the chicken breast home along with 4 of the 8 slices of tomato. I ate at TGI Friday's later in the week and had the Jack Daniels shrimp (took the breading off). Ate 6 of the 12 shrimp (they were on the small side) and took the other 6 home...JR (open RNY 07/17 -96 lbs)

3 years out...Breakfast is a protein shake with a banana mixed in (I like ProV60 vanilla, ProBlend 55 mocha cappucino or Pure Whey Stack chocolate). I make them in the blender with water, a tbs. of sf ff pudding mix, the banana and ice. Lunch is usually either soup or 1/2 sandwich, and if I'm hungry in the afternoon, I'll eat the other 1/2. I go out to dinner a lot and usually order fish. If I eat a little salad first, I can usually only eat about 1/3 of the entree, or if I eat nothing else first, I eat about 1/3-1/2 of the entree and take the rest home. I just love those leftovers! Also, now that the weather's colder, I love Diet Swiss Miss hot chocolate at night when you get those cravings. I have big mugs and use 2 packets, very filling. FYI, for those who don't read labels, Diet Swiss Miss has less sugar and calories than the No Sugar Added.

I'm a little over 2 years post op. Let's see.....at Chili's I usually go for the steak or chicken fajita quesadilla and eat 2-3 wedges. If someone orders the boneless spicy chicken, I'll hve one or two of those and only 1 or 2 wedges. At Applebees I get either the club sandwich (they usually cut it in 1/2 and I eat about 2/3 or 3/4 of one of the halves) or I get their house steak and potato (and eat 1/4 of the potato and maybe 1/3 of the steak). Life is normal for me and I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything! As for desserts, I NEVER order dessert at a restaurant! If someone else orders something, I MIGHT have 1 bite and it totally satisfies me. If you worry about what you'll be able to eat, see my profile page for some dessert recipes, or visit www.freewebs.com/recipes-after-rny
