Question:
Help! How can I get in liquids and food when I'm not hungry?

I am exactly 1 wk post op and I can't seem to get in the required food or liquids or protein. I'm trying and manage food ok at times but I just have no appetite and cannot seem to get the liq protein in or water. I feel like I'm becoming a little dehydrated. I also am not remembering to get in my vitamins. When I remember its 2 am. Any suggestions?    — AJC750 (posted on April 10, 2002)

Andrea, I was never a good one to take pills either, so post op each day I would lay my vitamins out on my sink so that When I went to brush my teeth I would see them and take them. Now some vitamins you need to take with food. So this would remind me to do my first protien drink of the day. Your body is still healing and figuring out what you have done so don't stress to much about not getting everything in. I concentrated on getting in liquids. Do at least 1 protein shake a day and keep s/f popsicles on hand. This will help you from getting dehydrated.

The alternative has always been a good reminder for me. Not enough water = dehydration = not feeling good. Enough water = feel better = good for me = successful weightloss. Not supplementing = slowly screwing up my body = all kinds of problems. Supplementing = good for me = makes me feel good that I'm doing something for me = makes me want to do other things for me -- like exercise and eat right = successful long term weigh loss. It really is up to you. Get on the ball sister!!! :-) Good luck and God Bless!

I did the same thing until I was about 3 weeks post op. It was so hard getting the food and water down. I did not have any appetite at all. It will slowly return. Try to eat and drink as much as you can without over doing it. One thing that worked for me was chewing on crushed ice. It kept me hydrated. If you remember taking your vitimans at 2:00 am then get up and take them. One thing that I did was just remember with my noon meal to take it. How are you feeling otherwise?

Same here Andrea. When i was just pre op i thought i'd never be able to get all that stuff down. So i concentrated on the water, and tried to get down what protein i could!!! (drinks) not whipping it till frothy helped..the froth seemed to fill me up quicker. So i just slowly blended the protein drink this helped. It takes awhile don't worry you will be okay..Hang in there keep chin up...soon you'll eat more than you want ha

Hi... I am the original poster. I'm doing much better. I have created a little niche in one spot with all of my stuff in it (actually a Longaberger basket) : ) I have a pill box now with what I must take in am, noon, pm including vitamins already split. I switchd to little 8 oz bottles of water which psychologically is easier to begin consuming if that makes sense. I bought some different protein that I can make in smaller than 16 oz quantities. I've had a pretty good day. While in hospital, I had a period where kidneys weren't putting out fluid so hence had a lot of iv solutions. Dr. today said that may slow down that immediate first week loss but I should see something dramatic now that I am up and moving around more. ! Thanks for all of your input. I'm doing much better. Andrea
