Question:
How many popsicles is too many each day???

I'm 8 days post-op and it's 2pm and I've already had 4 popsicles (the size with one stick) and some soup broth and water. My question is, what is the max amount of popsicles I should consume in one day. I feel like I could eat them all day but don't want to over do it. I go to the doctor tomorrow for my first visit since surgery and can ask him, but wanted to post as well. Thanks!    — Cheryl T. (posted on October 16, 2002)

I eat them also and assumed that they should be an unilimited or "free" item..however when I questioned the nutritionist about it she said that "2" should be the limit..So I stick to that...

I was told in the beginning (the first week or two) to treat them like a meal, but when I asked why as they are basically the same as a sugar-free drink frozen, she (the nutritionist) said it's to help train you that what you chew is food and to go slooowly. I say bunk lol and eat as many as I crave in a day. It beats the other cravings I have had over the years!

We were also told 'all we want' because they count towards fluid intake.

As long as they are sugar-free, you can have all that your want. You may want to take things like crystal-light or other non-calorie drinks and make your own popsicles too...

Eat all you want. I did during the first week liquid phase. Unfortunatly, I could'nt find any sugar free ones so I lived on Schwan's Bomb Pop jr.s. I think they have around 7-11 grams of sugar each. You are going to need calories badly. So eat however many it takes. Personally I was'nt hungry so I had to force myself to eat... yet they were cold (I craved anything cold) and went down great.

The information my doctor gave me was no more than 3 per day (surgar free of course).

I'm 7 months out and I still eat them like they are going out of style. On a day that I have bad head hunger I can pack away 6 or 7 of them( sf of course ). This has not hurt my weight loss( down 126lbs ) and has saved me from eating way more damaging things. It's our only freebie so enjoy because when your hunger does come back you will be happy you have them. Good luck

I am interested in the responses of others to this question too. I love SF popsicles. I ate them alot pre-op and got right back into them post-op. I did have some concern when I noticed on the box that although they are SF, the brand I eat contains 15 calories and 3 carbs. The carbs worried me more than the calories. I asked my nutritionist about it, and confessed to eating 10 a day, and she wasn't concerned. I am still enjoying them but not eating as many. I prefer them in the summer, and it's starting to get a little nippy here in the East. Good luck to you.

I couldn't resist this question. I eat a TON of SF popsicles. They are getting me over the hump for liquid every day. Blue Bunny makes a lot of no sugar added and sugar free varieties. Also, if you know someone who sells "Pampered Chef", get an ice shaver. It was about $20 and you just put frozen water (or Crystal Light, etc.) in it and shave it into sno cones. It is pretty inexpensive that way. My doc also said that as long as they are SF, go for it, since I don't get in enough of anything even at 7 months post-op.

Every since I went home from the hospital I have enjoyed shaved ice with sugar free syrup over it and those sugarfree popsicles (grape, cherry, orange) that come in the yellow box that are 15 calories each. I do 2-3 of these a day and don't feel guilty about it one bit. I'm 9 weeks post-op and down 51.5 pounds. I think where the nutritionists are coming from is to "train" yourself to control your eating. But if it's low calorie and provides fluids, go for it. I don't do the sugar free products that are higher in calories--that would defeat the purpose of them for me. But one, once in a while wouldn't hurt.

Cheryl, Are you eating sugar free popsicles? If so, I would think that you can have as many as you wish. They have 15 calories each and my surgeon counts them as part of the fluid intake. I am ten months post-op and I sometimes eat 4 or 6 a day now. It just depends. I don't think it has hurt me as I have lost over 150 pounds in 10 months and am still losing Good luck to you.
