Question:
About the average weight loss question...

I am 3 months post op and have only lost 36 pounds since the surgery. Worse, I have not lost anything for the last 3 weeks. I eat 3 meals and a snack every day and walk at least 2 miles 4-5 times a week. I have not had any problems since vomiting a few times at week three. I hardly read the message board anymore because I get so discouraged. I wonder if my MD just poked a few holes in my belly and didn't bother with the surgery. Did any slow losers make it to goal?    — Denise H. (posted on April 30, 2002)

Denise, I know it seems slow compared to others, but think of it this way. At the rate you're going, you will lose 144 pounds in a year. 12 pounds a month (so far) times 12 months. Keep doing what you're doing. The weight will continue to come off.

Hi Denise, It sounds as if you are doing everything right! Do you know how many calories you are taking in each day? Is it possible that your walking is burning up enough calories that your body thinks it is in starvation mode? Maybe you need to up the calories a little. The hardest thing about this surgery and recovery is the mental issues in my opinion. Be patient with yourself and don't let your rate of loss get you down. The losses vary greatly among all of us. If you're taking enough calories in, then try to just enjoy the pounds going. I've read where some people lose slowly at first but catch up later.

I had surgery Feb 26, 2002 and lost 55.5 lbs pretty fast now I am at a stand still and have been for about 3 weeks also. I've tried to adjust to make sure I was getting enough calories and water and exercise. I thought a few times the Doc must have did mine wrong. I don't know maybe it's the weather!!! Notify me asap if you figure out how to break the curse!!! LOL :-}

Sounds like you are doing everything right. I would remember to check your measurements. Maybe you are still losing inches just not pounds. Hang in there girl! I am still pre-op, but have seen other posts similar. You'll break the plataeu!

Denise, I know just what you are talking about! I had my surgery 2/28/02 and have only lost 37 lbs and 5 of those lbs was JUST this week!! I was on a plateau for over 3 weeks and getting so darn discouraged. My first month I lost 25 lbs. and then my 2nd month ONLY 7 lbs., a total of 32 in 8 weeks which is so much less than many others. My surgeon said I was doing great, everyone is different and it also depends on how much you had to lose to begin with. He said your body takes time to adjust sometimes. During the plateau I was getting so discouraged and depressed, even cried a few times about the darn scale not moving - ha - I felt like I was trying so hard and it wasn't moving. My surgeon told me to try and get in at least 90 grams of protein per day, trying to stick to lowfat and drink lots of water. I've been trying so hard to do that and the plateau finally broke this week and I've lost 5 lbs, I'm so elated to say the least! It was so hard hitting a plateau so early in this WLS journey for me. It does sound like you are doing everything right and it WILL come off, we just have to be patient and remember we didn't put this on overnite and everyone is different. I've also been tracking my calories on fitday.com and that has really helped me get a perspective on how many calories I'm consumign a day and how many grams of protein, carbs and fat. Though my surgeon said I shouldn't really worry about counting calories. I'm averaging 1,000 calories per day, I had a DISTAL RNY. Anyhow, you hang in there!

Denise, I too was a slow loser. I had surgery 7/9/01. To date I have lost 114 pounds. I started out at 289 and by month 3 had lost about 40 lbs. I went for about 3 weeks without losing anything. Then all of a sudden the weight lose started again and I averaged about 10 pounds a month. I have found if I slack up on the water intake, my loss slows down. I am very proud of the 114 pounds down, but would also get discouraged when reading how fast other people seemed to lose. Hang in there, it will come off. I am down to 173 now, 23 pounds from my goal, and my window is still wide open, if it takes me a little longer, so be it, I can already do things I haven't done in years, and finally enjoy what each day brings, so do not worry about it, just do everything you are doing and it will happen. Good Luck.
