Question:
I'm 6-months Post-op and have developed gallstones.

I'm 6-months post-op, have lost 81 lbs., and have now developed gallstones. Had a major gallstone attack last week and will be having surgery to remove my gallbladder next week. What complications could I encounter?    — Lorna R. (posted on September 26, 2003)

Gallbladder surgery is pretty routine these days. Hopefully the surgeon doing your case is either your WLS surgeon, or someone that knows you had this done! The main problem is the gas they used to inflate your abdomen - sometimes they can't get it all out and it rises to your neck/shoulder and it can actually hurt quite a bit. Otherwise, you'll feel a little tired and tender, but definitely not as dangerous as your WLS, simply because your body is in better shape now without the burden of those extra pounds to support with your heart and lungs. Do the same things as you did for your WLS - drink plenty of water and get walking (for the gas and DVT prevention) as soon as you can after surgery.

I developed gallstones when I was 12 mos. post-op. I had the LAP gallstone surgery on a Thursday night about 8:30 p.m. and was home by 3 p.m. the next day. Had a small problem with diarrhea following the surgery, but a little Immodium AD fixed me right up. With mine, they made 4 incisions, 3 on the right side and one at the top of my belly button. All have healed up just fine!

I had my surgery on March 26th - 6 months today! And I've lost 82 lbs - we're twins!! Anyway I've been having right sided pain under my ribs for the past week and I am wondering if mine is gallstones too -- interesting. Good Luck on your surgery - God Bless you- Sally
