Advanced Surgical Partners of VA Bariatric Center

8/9/02 I have an initial consultation scheduled with Dr. Schroder on August 14. I am really excited about it. Also, I was very impressed with how quickly they were able to get me in. I first contacted Dr. Sugerman's office and was told that I would have to wait until January 20 for a consultation. I decided to check out Dr. Schroder instead. I kept my appointment with Dr Sugerman just in case, but I hope that I won't need it.
8/14/02 Saw Dr Schroder today and all went well. He was very nice. He answered all of my questions. His office staff especially Debbie was really nice and helpful. The office was pretty slow when I got there but it didn't take long to fill up. I believe that Dr. Schroder is a good Dr. and has good personal skills.
11/01/02 Had surgery on Oct 15 all went well. Dr. Schroder is an excellent surgeon and seems to really care about his patients. No regrets on my choice of surgeon.
01/08/02 Just had my three month appointment with Dr. Schroder. All is well. I am really happy that I chosed him. Debbie and Dr. Schroder are the absolute best. I feel as if they are really in my corner. He always tells me how great I look and how well I am doing. When I was slacking on exercise, he was honest and told me to step it up a notch. He is the best.

What can I say but "kudos for Dr. Schroder and his staff!!!" I've been waiting patiently for approval and Dr. Schroder and his staff have been there with me every step of the way. I know I'm not Dr. Schroder's only patient, but I feel like I am. I feel like they want me to succeed. I feel like they want everything to be all right for me. I don't know what else to say but "thanks" to God for such a great group of people.

Okay, I'm about 5 weeks post-op and I still have nothing but great things to say about Dr. Schroder. Dr. Schroder gave me the general run-down of what would happen the morning of surgery, he gave me a good idea of how my incisions would look and he told me how great I would do.
I would equate the surgical prep-team with the NASCAR pit crew. Very fast, very good, very caring. Dr. Schroder came to let me know it was about time and the anaesthesiologist's (sp) team went to work. I blinked and surgery was over. Dr. Schroder told my husband that my surgery went very well. I never doubted him or his ability.
I had the occassional late-night pain and I would call the advice line. The other surgeons on duty would take 15-20 minutes to call me back. NOT DR. SCHRODER!!! 3 minutes tops. He was kind and patient and he didn't make me feel stupid or like I was annoying him. He genuinely cares.
He only meets his WLS patients on Wednesday mornings and because my teaching schedule doen't coincide with this, he and his Nurse (Debbie Younger) make all kinds of arrangements for me.
I'm so glad I found him and Debbie. They've made my experience a relatively painless and happy one.

I met with Dr. Schroder today. The appointment was scheduled for 10:10 and I was told to come in at 10:00 in order to fill out the paperwork. I sat in the waiting room for over one hour. I was weighed and put in a "holding room" with three other people to view a 30 minute video. It was a bit uncomfortable, but the nurse Debbie asked if it would be ok if the other people sat and watched the video with me and I said yes. So if I was uncomfortable sitting there with three other people, it was my fault because I agreed. After the video was over, I was lead to another room and waited for the doctor. I waited about 2 minutes and he came in and introduced himself and began his "Gastric Bypass" speech. I felt a bit rushed...probably because I had waited 2 hours to meet him and I knew he had three other people <just like me> waiting to talk to him. BUT he didn't make me feel rushed at all. In fact at one point I said "I know you're busy, but I was wondering..." He said "No problem, take your time" He answered all my questions. I spent about 5 minutes with him total...but all my questions were answered, I was at ease with the appointment.
I'm sure with all the news coverage about this procedure, it's become quite popular...and I know his office was a bit behind today so I won't judge his office on today's visit...but I did kinda feel like I was on an assembly line of sorts. I'm sure my next visit will be better!

The first time I met Dr. Schroder, I thought he was great. He didn't mind answering my many, many questions and concerns. His nurse Debbie is great too. She is always extremely busy, and is sometimes hard to reach. I think she may need her own assistant! All and all, I wouldn't have chosen any other surgeon. I had to have my gallbladder out about 2 months after surgery and waited through 3 days of misery just to have Dr. Schroder do that surgery too. I think that he is very encouraging and truly concerned with the well-being of his patients. He has always been supportive and I would reccomend him to anyone...in fact I have on several occasions. My hat's off to you Dr. Schroder. Tracey Eastwood

I found him to be friendly, competent, and very good about explaining the surgery.
My impression of him improved over time...very impressed.
Staff was very helpful & friendly
I have no complaints about Dr. Schroder
He is a very caring MD. He is sincere in his patient welfare.
Aftercare was important and encouraged.
No structured aftercare program that I am aware of.
I felt the risks of surgery were addressed, but maybe not stressed enough
I rate him as excellent
I find surgical competence as #1, but bedside manner is extremely important to the patient and securing trust in your surgeon.

I had my consult with Dr. Schroder on 9/11/02. I was impressed with him and his office... there were only 2 other patients in the office; very clean and new looking building.
My husband had already had the surgery (not Dr. Schroder) so I was already very fimilar with the process...I had also done alot of research about the surgery in general, so he didn't have to go into detail alot, but he was more than willing to answer all the questions I did have...

I really liked Dr. Schroder, and his front desk staff is a little cool but his nurse Debbie is very friendly and helpful. He was very informative about the risks of surgery and helpful with my concerns. He does seem a bit in a hurry at times, but he did visit twice a day in the hospital and was very cheerful.
I was a little confused with the two-week change of diet, but that was partly my fault as I had seen a dietitian in Winston-Salem, NC before surgery and they have a completely different diet and I was trying to use both. After my four week check up I am feeling much better and following only Dr. Schroder's diet. His program for changing diets is very structured.
I would recommend him to anyone. His surgical competence and bedside manner are both great.

I think Dr. Schroder is a kind and competent doctor. He did not seem to be rushed in our consult, (even though I know he had to be) and took time to answer all my questions. Nothing negative to say.
It does take a while for someone to call you back. In my case sometimes days. But hey, that's life in a busy doctors' office for you!

Dr. Schroder is a kind, sweet, and compassionate surgeon. He doesn't rush you through your visits and allows ample time for you to go over your questions and concerns. Dr. Schroder has you watch a video, gives you materials to read over and over again, in preparation for the behavioral modification and nutrition classes that you will need to attend. I discovered him through a friend and drive 3 hours back and forth just to receive the premium care I deserve. I find his bedside manner to be exceptional and I would recommend his services to anyone. Debbie, his nurse, is also very sweet and efficient. Everytime I had to call her for my insurance updates or had any questions, she was more than happy to except the challenge. His receptionist staff is also very helpful and kind. So far, pre-surgery, I have had a wonderful experience with Dr. Schroder and his staff.
