Donald Fry, M.D. Bariatrics Bariatric Center

Hi I just wanted to update this as I have finally had my app't with the surgeon on March 4th, 2003....
At first I was nervous...and then as the doctor finally came in...and started by introducing himself...and giving a description of this surgery...and the importance of understanding the pros and cons of this...and statistics were also given...and knowing that this is a revision I did have questions that others of a first timer would not have...and this was discussed...I do feel comfortable with the doctor...and really appreciated his honesty with me...as I know that this is a very serious decision for me to make...I would like to say that Dr. Fry is a very sincere doctor...and had explained all that I wanted to know...and should I have anymore questions I should bring them in with me on my next visit...I shall update again then...
May 30th,2002---I am still waiting to hear from the insurance whether I am approved for the revision...in the meantime I go to the support group meetings and this week..Dr. Fry will be there "again"...this will be his second time in a 6 month period...I think that this shows his concern of wanting to learn of the post-op's and what may be some of their later "problems"...And for Dr. Fry, he is the chief surgeon of the hospital..so with him taking the time to come and talk with the support group shows his interest in learning about the long term of this surgery...

Dr. Fry is one of the most thorough, interested, caring Doctors I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Anyone who has ever been obese will understand what I mean when I say, "He gets it." "He understands"
The better I got to know him, the better I liked him.
His staff (particularly "Neets") are all GREAT!
Can't think of anything negative.
Only that he is VERY busy and you may have to wait three to five months to get a scheduled date. Then another couple of months before you actually get to the date.
Aftercare is very important to him.
Structured aftercare?? Wait until you read the material he gives out pre-op.
He defititely make sure everyone is aware of the risks involved!
On a scale of 1 to 10 Dr. Fry is at the very least a 9.5.
Both GREAT!!!!!!!

Dr. Fry was a very understand and kind physician, he did not look down at you for being large, but willing to listen to what you had to say. More physician should take lesson from Dr. Fry.

Very nice, explains procedure and answers questions.
Long wait. Hopelessly overbooked .
Staff kind, caring and effcient.

Very busy surgeon! I have been a little disappointed in the long wait between appointments but I figure something good is worth the wait! And if Dr. Fry is this busy...he must be good! Very nice man and his nurse "Neets" has had WLS and is also very helpful!

Very Busy but caring. I feel he is competent and I trust him.

I thought he was going to be grouchy and not very nice.
He turned out to be really sweet and very compassionate and he listened to me.
His office staff are all great and very professional, and made me feel very comfortable.
That his clinic is alwasys packed and it is very hard to get in there.
That he is very understanding and will do all he can to help you, he is also very dedicated to his patients and their health.
He is very adamant about aftercare and support groups and follow up appointments.
Yes the aftercare program is very structured and there are many appointments and tests.
He is very truthful about risks and goes over all the stats with you and how your own health problems can affect your outcome.
I rate him as #1 I cannot imagine having another doctor being with me thru all of this.
Both are great Dr. Fry combines it all!!!

I really appreciated my first meeting with Dr. Fry. He sat down and in an unhurried manner drew for me his surgical approach, answered all my questions and even openly told me of the problems and losses he has faced in his career. He leveled with me that the surgery is a springboard to a new lifestyle and that there will still be work to do post op. He gave me the encouragement that not only of his competency, but that i was not just "another notch in his belt".
I liked his straight "gut level" discussion.

When I had my first meeting with him he made me feel great about the surgery. He was very informative very patient with all my questions. I felt comfortable. He knows his business. The staff was great they are real buzy you can tell but when they are with you they make it clear you are most important. They stressed the importance of education and support over and over. They recommended a nutritionist, and a support group. They wanted to know how my family and friends felt about this they asked about my marital status. That made me feel like they are concerned about me as a human being which when it comes to Dr's you know how that is. Overall I was pleased.

Although I have not had the most positive experience with UNM in general, I have nothing bad to say about Dr Fry. I met with him on 6/18/02 and had a pleasant discussion with him. He did not seem rushed at all, and answered an entire list of questions I had brought with me. He was not condescending (one of my major fears when I see a doctor), and honestly seemed very sympathetic.
