George Cowan, Jr., M.D., Professor, UTHSC Bariatric Center

After waiting 7 weeks for an appointment I met Dr. Cowan on May 31. I feel he is a very knowledgable and caring physician. I think his office is greatly understaffed, which is probably due to UT and not necessarily his fault. It is definitely a "waiting game". I was approved by insurance July 12 and to date have not been given a surgery date although I was told it would be October or November.

I think highly of Dr. Cowan. I think he is very knowledgable in the field of bariatric surgery. He is kind, caring and helpful. I have had no complications from my surgery. since my surgery on Feb. 12, 2001 I have lost 80 lbs. and now feel great!! I'm over half way to my goal!
Dr. Cowan's office staff leaves a lot to be desired. They are often rude and It always takes hours for your appointment. I now always take an insulated bag and snacks for the trip (1 1/2 hours from home). I have learned to take food and to be patient. Somethings are worth waiting for, and this new chance at life is one of them.

caring and understanding. intectually stimulating. treated me as the well educated person that i am. office staff was considerate, polite and very helpful.that he was a little overloaded and didn't have as much time as i would have liked.however, gave me his e-mail (academically) and he is good about reponding. he has an extremely supportive program with a built in nutritionist and support group. my internist who i adore, found this surgeon for me when i told him that i was looking for the best supportive care and the highest number of suceessful surgical procedures.
he was honest about risks but i have had only good surgical experiences, fast healing and minimal scaring. for the rest i will see how it goes and update as necessary. so far i rate him 100%

I went to his seminar 4-5-2001. It was great
very informative. He answered every questions
with patients and you could tell he is very
supportive of his patients. My original
consultation date was 6-7-2001, then it got
bumped back to 6-21-2001. LOL but it gets
better two days after that they called me to
come in last Thursday 4-19-2001 due to a
cancellation and everyone they tried to call
would not answer the phone numbers they had.
I truly have a guardian spirit looking out
for me. The office staff is great, very nice
and helpful. Now I am waiting to hear from
my insurance company. In the mean time I have
scheduled my psys evaluation. He makes that
manditory. He wants to make sure you are able
to handle all the changes your body will go
through. He has support group called George's
Angels.... I haven't been to one of there
meetings but, I plan to go to the next one.
They are in his office after hours. Will
type more as I have more information. Overall
impression was GREAT!!!! The only thing that
bothers me is the long waiting process but it
is worth it to me.

I have not met with Dr. Cowan. I have met with his associate Dr. Hiler who was wonderful. He took care of my initial consultation. He took time to answer my questions and to describe the surgery to me. The office staff is very difficult to get in touch with. They were very helpful while I was in the office but it is not easy to reach them by phone and voice mails are sometimes not answered. My insurance has been approved and a surgery date scheduled. I am currently going through other testing necessary for surgery.

Well first off, my visit was with Dr. Cowan's partner, Dr. Hiler.. which surprised me but he was good nonetheless.
When I first got to the office, I was maybe one of three people and it didn't take them long for me to get back into a waiting room.
Dr. Hiler came in, introduced himself and asked me a lot of questions. Mostly about any discomforts I've had.. do I sleep well? What about sleep apnea? Also, asked a lot about joints and pains there.
Dr. Hiler is an older man, older than Dr. Cowan, but seemed knowledgeable to me. I'm not sure if he will do my surgery or not.
Next, I am scheduled for a psych eval and a sleep apnea test.

Before you can make an appointment with Dr Cowan you must go to one of his seminars. At this time I realized that this was the Dr that I wanted to place my future in. He is very compassionate about his work and he also has a sense of humor.
Dr. Cowan's staff is very busy but if you fax or mail some questions to them they will get back to you with the answers that you have. I found this better than trying to cold call this way they can have the answers ready for you and go to the next patient. While you are in his office they are very much aware of you and take time to answer all of your questions.
Dr Cowan has you sign a contract saying that you are going to follow up with regular visits to him so he can monitor your success and you are also required to attend at least 4 group support meetings a year for life.
I feel that the program that he sets up for you will help to achieve your goal.
Dr Cowan has been doing this surgery for many years and his bedside manner is great. He always gives you a hug before he leaves the room. Very warm and friendly.
