Grinnell Bariatrics Bariatric Center

I have not met with him yet.

I met with Dr. Coster and found him to be very nice and answered every question aand didn't hesitate to help with this surgery! I have nothing but wonderful things about him, from being and awesome surgeon to great and having a super bedside manner. His office help was very helpful and made sure they had his fee for the surgery(the part my insurance wasn't covering) 7 days before surgery NO PAYMENTS! He was very direct and to the point and I had already met with Dr. Boe at the Bariatric Treatment Center in Belvidere IL. So I had very few questions and new that my insurance was going to cover there part!

Dr. Coster is a VERY caring surgeon. I was very impressed on my first consultation. It was 3 months after my consultation trying to get my insurance company to give me approval. I called the drs office about everyday and bugged them, but the the office staff was very patient with me and did everything they could to get my insurance approval. On my first post-op appointment, all I did was cry, because I felt lonely and sad(post surgery depression), Dr coster and his nurse sat down and talked to me until they knew I was going to be alright! In fact normally he has you come back 1 month after the first postop, but since I was having depression, I go back in two weeks! Dr. coster is very frank and to the point and won't sugar coat anything. The most I like about him is how personable he is, you can just tell he CARES and not just a surgeon. I've had several surgerys in my life, but have never had a surgeon who cares as much as Dr Coster.

First off he was darn cute. But I can't say that I really give a hoot about cute when my life is on the line. He was very upbeat and straight forward. He answered questions well from not only me, but my mother and husband. He was very matter of fact and in no way made me feel like I was fat due to mortal sins such as sloth or glutony. He responded well to my other health issues and recorded his letter to the insurance company right in front of me so that I could give input. He was reassuring and competent. As an ex-nurse and a health claims support analyst (one think I do is okay other people's WLS!) I am picky and have lots of questions. If you are tired of dinking around with the University of Rudeness (I mean Iowa) go to this man. You don't wait months/years for appointments.
He emphasizes after care byut doesn't have an established support group and well addressed the risks and what he did to try to avert them. Overall, so far, I would give him an A. I will reserve judgement until done. As a nurse and a patient, I don't want a doctor that is my buddy but a lousy doctor. However, you don't have to be the other way either. You need to feel comfortable talking to the doctor, asking questions and being free to express your fears or concerns. Many people die because an "excellent" surgeron has the patient so intimidated that they don't tell him what he needs to know or won't listen to the patient. You can't be a truly good doctor if you don't listen to your patients.

Have not met him yet. But I have heard tons of great things about him. I've met alot of his patients. He is my best friend's surgeon and if I trust him with her. I'm sure I'll trust him to do me.
Now that I've had surgery and lots of follow-up I can honestly say Dr. Coster is an amazing and wonderful doctor. He is understanding and compassion and has a real love for his work.

I really liked Dr. Coster. He wasn't kidding around. He seems to take this surgery and me seriously. He listened to my concerns and quickly melted them away. He is confident in his abilities as a surgeon and the safety and appropriatness of the procedure. I haven't had surgery yet, so I don't have much else to say, but my first impressions were good.

I was a little disapointed with Dr. Coster's approach, the first question out of his mouth was "Have you ever considered having stomach bypass surgery?" I had gone in to see him about a problem with acid reflux. Dr. Coster explained in great detail about the surgery (Roux-en-Y short limb)and also about the surgery for the acid reflux. He explained how this bypass would help me with my other medical problems. Diabetes, high blood pressure, high colesterol, and of course the acid reflux.
He was very friendly and easy to talk to. He has a great sense of humor.
I didn't care for him dictating while he was doing the consultation, but this is my personal pet peeve.
Since I'm from Grinnell and he knows my family, he told me to talk with my sister who is a RN at the hospital and works with his gastric bypass patients after their surgery.
His office staff has been very helpful with questions. They return calls usually within the day.
Very little has been said at this time about aftercare and the risks of surgery were just covered briefly.
Dr. Coster has a very relaxed bedside manner and he has great credentials.

I found a great surgeon to do my Open RNY surgery. I belong to a support group on Yahoo which is where I got the recommendation for this particular doctor. Everyone on that support group sang his praises. I also liked the fact that he was within an hour of where I live. The best thing about this surgeon is his followup care.

When I met Dr. Coster I was very impressed he really cares about the people who come to see him, he takes the time to explain things to you and makes you feel good about yourself he does'nt jugde you on how you got this way he just makes you know that there is a better way to live and he is definitley able to help you get there i would recomend him to anyone he is doing my surgery this month and I would'nt want anyone else to do it.
