Dr. Stoner has retired.

Dr. Stoner is a caring professional. I had many complications with my surgery but throughout all my troubles he was consistantly there.

He would call me and check on my progress and had genuine caring and concern during the entire process.

Janet and his office staff are just the best.

Yes he did address the surgery risks.

My family I met with Janet and Dr. Stoner today. They were both friendly and well informed. Dr. Stoner was very patient with my 10 year old granddaughter and her questions also. He has a nice smile and a good sense of humor.
July 5th 2003 - Dr. Stoner calls me today to tell me I have been approved and then tells me he is retiring and can't do my surgery. He gives me a list of referrals to contact. After I waste my time calling all of them, none of them perform the procedure we had discussed besides Iowa City and they have a 6 to 9 month waiting list - nice.

The first time I called Dr. Stoner's office, his receptionist/nurse was so friendly and was already answering questions I had. We set up an appointment for me to come in and meet with Dr. Stoner. My husband wanted to come too, and we didn't have a babsitter for our 2 young children so we had to bring them with. Dr. Stoner was so patient and understanding. He answered all the questions I had and asked my husband if he had any concerns. He sent in my letter of necessity and my surgery was approved!

I am so happy with Dr. Stoner, he has answered every question I have and he has really helped my husband understand what is going on, also.

I called Dr. Stoner's office last week and he answered the phone himself. I just think so much of him, he asked me how things were going, he remembered the problems that I had a couple months ago, all this without even looking at my file. Sometimes doctors seem to only know you by your case file, but not Dr. Stoner. I have had at least 3 people contact me since surgery, all wanting Dr. Stoner's phone number because they have heard so many good things about him.

Update 04-13-2003
I just wanted to say the more I have seen Dr. Stoner the more I like him!! He is so compassionate and caring. This is the 1st time in my life I have ever had a Dr. who answers his own phone and speaks to you like you are actually somebody. He is available 24-7 to his patients (and I mean that literally) and he has a great aftercare program. He is just the best! I have him to thank for being where I am today and for my future well being. I would not have wanted any other Dr. to have done my surgery! THANKS DR. STONER!!!

At this time I have only been for the 1st visit/consultation. I found Dr. Stoner to be very informative and knowledgeable. Although he is a bit odd he is very friendly and seemed to be very concerned with me and my problems. Janet (his secretary/office manager/right-hand-woman) is just super! I have already done some research on Dr. Stoner and everything I can find about him has been very positive! So far I am very comfortable with him.

Dr. Stoner was way cool... He thinks and contemplates every word he's gonna say...and I like a Dr. that you can make smile or laugh...

I met with Dr. Stoner on 3/18/03 and he seemed like a really nice guy.

Although I have researched weight loss surgery extensively, he was still able to educate me on both the procedures he does RNY and VBG.

When I first went in, I was leaning towards the RNY, but after discussing things with the doctor, I have decided to go for the LAP VBG. I understand that the RNY has a higher long-term success rate, but it is a much more drastic measure and I think that the VBG will be just the tool that I need to conquer my problem.

We discussed the problems with vitamin deficiencies and malabsorption with the RNY and the fact that there has not been very long term studies done on people who have had the RNY procedure. Since I am in my late 20's, I still have a ways to go and I don't know if I want to re-route my whole system if the VBG will let me do what I need.

The VBG is much easier to reverse should that need ever arise and the VBG also has a much lower mortality rate (1 in 1000 vs 1 in 200 for the RNY). Those facts, plus the Laproscopic surgery aspect have made me decide that the VBG is for me.

My impression of Dr. Stoner is that he is a very knowledgeable man and is friendly. I felt at ease in his office. Being a big person, I've noticed that a lot of doctors take the approach that obesity is a choice and not a disease, but Dr. Stoner and his assistant, Janet were both understanding and sympathetic.

Janet was very patient and a good person to speak with. She explained a lot of the aftercare to me. She also explained how they would apply to my insurance for me and what I can do to help speed along the process.

I feel very comfortable with Dr. Stoner and don't have any problems with letting this man operate on me. He seems to be very competent and his former patients on this board seem to have nothing but good words for him.

I have not met Dr Stoner yet but I have talked with his nurse Janet on the phone a few times.....she is very nice and up front I like that. I will let you know more once my consultation is done.

Dr.Stoner is a wonderful man. I would reccommend him to anyone considering surgery. his nurse Janice is wonderful as well. I had some issues not related to surgery and he called me twice in the hospital. Im talking in my home town, he really goes out of his way.

Dr. Stoner is a very quiet soft-spoken man. He often closes his eyes when he's talking to you, it's like he's trying to collect the words so he gives you all the information he should. If you want someone who looks you in the eye, it's not him. But he is a very gentle man and always ends each office visit thanking you for coming in and taking time out of your day for him.

He has a small office staff, his main nurse/assistant is Janet. She is takes care of all the insurance stuff, handles alot of the phone questions and goes over the paperwork with a fine tooth comb. Janet also oversees the support group at the hospital for WLS patients - all are welcome whether his patient or not.

Dr. Stoner was very thorough about the pre-op tests. I had to have a couple done twice because he was concerned about a few things. He also consulted with my OBGYN because he is so thorough. It was frustrating but in the long run I feel more secure with knowing everything looks good.

When Dr. talked about the surgery, benefits and risks, he first asks what you know, has you give him an explanation and fills in the information you might have missed. He explained that a revision is a more complicated procedure than a firt time and has a slightly higher risk of complications. He stressed that he will take you back to the OR if there is something going on he doesn't like. He also let's you know that he will not send you home unless he is absolutely certain things are going smoothly.
